Suddenly, I now have a small (two pieces) collection of vintage checks signed and drawn on by cartoonists. I have a DeBeck illustrated check that I picked up a couple of years ago, and just recently I acquired this nifty Roy Crane check. There's an interesting backstory to the Crane check. Waldo C. Moore was an avid numismatist and philatelist. His collections of rare coins, currency, and stamps were some of the largest and finest in America. Moore was also an avid check collector and especially liked checks autographed by celebrities of his time. He would send them a bank draft for 1 cent from The Peoples Banking Company of Lewisburg, Ohio. In return celebrities would send him a signed 1 cent check. It is notable that Crane actually sent Moore a check, as he did not usually respond to requests for sketches from fans.

A penny! Back then they would have kept the check. Now with phone camera deposits, you can draw the penny and keep the art.
