DescriptionPublished 1980The Most Special of Effects written by Scott Edelman The life and death of a special effects man. I loved this title page with all the sci-fi special effects. Time Warp was a DC Anthology of mostly science fiction stories and part of the $1.00 comics line that DC put out in the late 70's and early 80's. It ran only 5 issues but I was very happy to pick up each and every issue. Joel Magpayo was a Filipino artist who started working professionally as an illustrator at the age of 16, drawing serials and standalone shorts for various Philippine komiks anthologies through the 1970s. He did three stories for DC comics before moving to Australia and becoming a fine arts painter. Social/Sharing |

It doesn't matter if I'm Trek or Wars
He really does a mean art ink
It doesn't matter if the Sci-Fi’s wrong
As long as you can share effects
'Cause Time is Warped in every special world shown
You know I cut, but never bid
An Otto in the night, pure delight
I can satisfy from Philippines
I'm a real smooth player, I'm a fantasy man
Master of illusion, comic brush in my hand
All the stages are empty when I steal the scenes
A Lazlo of love, Joel Magpayo
King of dreams

Those Filipino artists of the 70s and 80s were so amazing! It's a real treat to see one I've never known about. Wonderful style!

A fine tribute to sci-fi and movie making SFX magic on this title page!

As a lifelong fan of the Filipino school of comics artists, it blows my mind that even to this day, some 40+ years after first entering the hobby, I'm STILL discovering little known artists who had brief cups of coffee in the American big leagues of comic books. Such a cool looking Science Fiction splash, I know the genre alone was enough to get you to pick this one up!

Time Warp was one of those books I skipped as a kid because it was a dollar and had no superheroes I knew. In retrospect it was a trove of terrific art.
