DescriptionWhen it comes to memorable impactful moments in Skybound's Transfomers, it really does (so far) boil down to two key moments that stand out in developing the characterization of this version of Optimus Prime. Him having Megatron's fusion canon arm attached to him and when he accidentally steps on a deer, killing it but learning a valuable lesson on the fragility of life on Earth. In the moment on this page, Earth is in grave danger and Beachcomber is doing what he can to protect the still injured Spike and get him as far away as the action as he possibly can. Spike reluctantly agrees, as he doesn't feel that there is anything he can do to help. That is, until they come across a random deer in the forest and Spike remembers the conversation he had with Optimus in the moments after Optimus had stepped on a deer. Theyhad a lengthy conversation about what happened to Cybertron, about the value of life & family. In the moment here, Spike remembers all of that & decides...he must do something, doing nothing and leaving is not the answer. All of that is drawn beautifully here. I love that panel revealing the dear & how Spike & Beachcomber in the foreground help create some depth to allow our eyes to travel back and be drawn to the deer. Its a moment of revelation, and we can feel it through the visuals. I also had to get a page that is a call back to such a key moment (Optimus & the deer). Also, I couldn't pass up another Beachcomber page, could I? Love that little pacifist. Pacifism in the face of certain doom is not ideal, but here in this moment, its unseen...but Spike gets through to Beachcomber because we see him appear in a climactic moment in issue 12 (and that moment is also in my CAF gallery if interested). If you did pass on another Beachcomber page can you even call yourself a fan at that point!? The only battles you need to fight are with your own willpower! I'm only trying to incite a non pacifist response. ;-p
congrats on another great Corona example from the run!

Nice flashback to the deer scene that gave us the distinct difference between the Autobots and Decepticons. With this series, there's going to be a lot of memorable moments. I think Starscream's clap is going to be right up there that affected the whole Energon Universe.

Oh yeah, you're absolutely right! While I was writing, I was thinking of early Optimus moments, but yeah, the Starscream clap...that is a driving plot point connecting TF & Joe. Also why I targeted Tom Reilly pages featuring Duke's PTSD related to that pivitol moment.
Ultimately, these books are filled with some great moments and those fully along for the ride will be rewarded!

For me, it's the human moments that comics don't traditionally tackle within their stories that leave the strongest impact. It's all about that moment Optimus stepped on the deer and killed it. As you say, these Transformers must each weigh several tons and if they actually existed here on earth, they'd do plenty of serious damage before realizing that all is NOT the same as on Cybertron. The fragility of life, indeed.

The human moments are where this book unexpectedly shines. Of course it has the action that you would expect, but its what happens inbetween those action beats. The interpersonal moments, where we see each of them grappling with the effects of this war in their own ways. The dynamics between the humans and bots, something present in the cartoon & movies for "accessibility" sake...here though, we really see how each has somehting to offer the other & the outcomes their conversations lead to. Just some damn fine comics!
