DescriptionThis is the Original Cover Art preliminary for the Marvel Spotlight #32 cover, published in February of 1977 by Marvel Comics, and featuring the origin and first appearance of Spider-Woman! Done by the legendary Gil Kane in a combination of pencil and marker, it measures approximately 11" by 17", and is done on regular thin paper stock. It has some general handling wear, as you should be able to see there are fold/crease lines near the top edge, and also what looks like small pinholes in the corners. There is also some paper loss on the back side of the paper, from what looks like a tape pull, near the top right corner edge (the front side is blank, so it is not where any artwork is). I have included a picture of the published comic (for reference only, not included), so you can see just how close this piece is to the final published image. This is not only one of the key first appearance issues of the 1970's, but is so iconic and legendary that many of you might recall seeing it featured on a stamp released by the United States Postal Service. There were not many stamps issued, and some of the other key covers given this honor were Amazing Spider-Man #1, Hulk #1, Iron Man #1, and X-Men #1. Jessica Drew has become an important and beloved character in the Marvel Universe, and here you have a true key first appearance piece of artwork. The piece is signed by Gil Kane in the top margin, where it looks like he was working on the Nick Fury figure in pencil. Kane is one of the greatest artists ever to work at Marvel or DC Comics (and the comics industry as a whole, for that matter), having drawn more characters and titles than can all be listed, including Spider-Man, Superman, Batman, the Avengers, Green Lantern, Iron Man, the Flash, the Atom, Warlock, Captain Marvel, Thor, Conan The Barbarian, Captain America, Daredevil, Thunder Agents, X-Men, Teen Titans, Ka-Zar, and so many, many more. So having one of his best remembered images is truly spectacular. This is a pretty rare opportunity, so don't miss out on a chance to get an amazing piece that would look outstanding framed, and would be a true grail key piece in any collection.Social/Sharing |
