Bombs from Lt. Reed and two other planes hit the Soryu, although Reed's plane is shot down.

This looks like the NES game 1943 Battle of Midway set on difficulty level: Expert.  Everything about this rings true with the motivation of taking the risk that still required a lot of bravery.

Nice aerial action sequence. I love the use of drybrush for the explosions, too.
