Description

In 1996 I won a contest through the letter column in Bendis' Jinx (Caliber Press) to have a cameo appearance in which I get my ass kicked by the main character. This is the original art for page 11 of issue #7 of Brian Michael Bendis' Jinx from Caliber Comics (later reprinted by Image). This is the first page of my cameo as the "foul mouthed, chain-smoking crack whore." This was an early experience for me in the comics industry (I was 16 or 17 when I won that contest), and I was a die-hard fan of Bendis and his noir crime work--the writing and the art. I consider the joy of the interactions with him over the couple of years it took to receive the artwork, and the subsequent friendship/mentorship that developed, a significant part of what led to choosing comics as a career.

I attached another picture of the note which Bendis included when he sent over the original pages...it took a couple of years for him to get me the artwork after I won the contest, and since I was a kid with no industry experience, I didn't realize the turnaround time for artwork coming back to the artists. Being the natural skeptic I am, I figured Bendis had forgotten to send it, or something had happened to it in the mail. Over those couple of years, I would mail off a letter to Bendis every so often to try to find out what was going on, or keep it fresh in his mind that I existed. I tried to make them amusing and used different voices to keep him interested rather than annoyed at my persistence. Luckily, he understood and didn't get annoyed. The note was a cute nod to the time it took.
