Description

For extensive discussion of the backstory behind this page (written, penciled, and inked all by Wood), and its personal significance to me, see my entry for the previous page, on which our hero gets his assignment, a cool sword, and a lovely fairy-girl for a companion. I got that page first. Now I have this following page too!

On thise page, Johnny and Princess Yrill being their adventure, with dangers immediately besetting them. It has nine panels across three tiers, but not the usual nine-panel grid that one would expect.

Wood liked this "grasping hands from the ground" idea so much that he recycled it for the story "The Curse" in the 1972 Vampirella Annual; see additional images.

Wood at the height of his powers! He would return to the fantasy genre a decade later, but was never as good as he is here.

Tower of Shadows was on of my favorite anthology series of that era. The talent each issue was always too notch. That tall panel lower left is classic Wally Wood.

Having Sequential/Consecutive pages from Wally's Tower of Shadows is quite the collecting achivement, and the art is just so damn good! Panels 4, 5, and 6 especially wow! Two mighty fine pages, congrats!

Aw, yeah. 100% with you here on the magnificence of this art page and this memorable story. An adolescent high point in comics reading for me as well. Big congrats!

Fabulous art! It always amazes me that Wood could depict a villain that is comically cartoony and quite spookily nasty at the same time. I love the earth creatures emerging from the ground, and the composition in that final panel is brilliant too.
