Description

With the newest Fantastic Four film set to debut tomorrow, I thought this would be the prefect moment to post up a sweet page of art from Marvel's "first family." And this one even debuts a new villainous character, as well. Something this series is well known for.

Most people, when asked who has the best roster of of villains in Marvel Comics, will tell you Spider-Man has the best rouges gallery. Which is likely true, but a very close second has to go to the Fantastic Four. Many great threats were introduced in this series. From the shape-shifting Skrulls to the evil mirror team the Frightful Four, as well as the iconic menace of Dr. Doom to the cosmic threat of Galactus and the Silver Surfer, many of the greatest adversaries in the Marvel Universe got their start battling the Fabulous Foursome! While Fasaud, who's origin is spotlighted on this page, might not rank among the upper echelon of fear-inducing dangers, falling more into the "strange" camp rather than the "serious" one, it still shows just how much sway this series has in creating new threats, even decades after starting the "Marvel Age of Comics!"

Of course, even a silly concept can be seen as something more, when you have the right kind of talent presenting it. And I think that is very much the case here. John Buscema was well known for not having a lot of love for drawing superheroes, but in this scene you see some of the strengths of why he drew them so well. I've often said that no one did better figurework than "Big" John. The dramatic close-up in the second panel gives the right punch of menace and intensity, as it continues to build it in the next few panels, while the final panel brings home the danger with an excellent anatomy of an action shot (even including a touch of the classic "Kirby Krackle," to boot). It's a textbook case of how to properly pace and layout a scene and that, along with his incredible figurework, is what made John Buscema's work so exciting and such a joy to view, both then and now!

I have no idea just how well, or poorly, the new Fantastic Four film will be received by the audience, but if it can capture the magic and excitement that the comic created over 60 years ago, it could be a Renaissance moment, for both the movies and Marvel Comics, which would seem only fitting, since it was Marvel's "first family" who did so way back then, too!
