DescriptionHeck's muscular pre-code work for Comic Media sometimes startles fans who only know him from the Silver Age. This material is scarce (horror pages are nearly non-existent, as far as I've ever seen), so I'm very happy to have this violent near-horror GGA splash, with bonus drinking content. The whole story is super hard-boiled, with the hero sleeping with the bad guy's wife (that's before she dies, no necrophilia in this issue) and gunning down commies right and left. Thanks Jeff, for the deal!Social/Sharing |

Regular large art size. DEEP black ink. I think they used lead and asbestos in the ink back then.

I looked it up. The main ingredient in India ink is Carbon Black. That's the same powder used to make your tires black. Natural rubber is white. Other common ingredients in Indian ink include water, which serves as a solvent to dissolve the carbon black, and a binding agent such as gum Arabic or shellac, which helps the ink adhere to paper and other surfaces. Some modern formulations of Indian ink may also contain additives such as preservatives, thickeners, and drying agents to improve its performance.
Anyway, I haven't been able to find out what different ingredients they used back then, but that is some mighty beautiful deep, black ink on that page. I love Noir comics, and this Heck is a terrific example!

This is looks so much better in your collection. It is such a dramatic page and a great example of what Heck could do.

Awesome large art splash! The subject matter with violent intent is so visceral with the deeper inks!

Yikes! That is one badass title page! I would never have guessed it was Don Heck--The drawing is so strong and the inks so thick and rich. Gorgeous pick-up, congats!
