Description

"Batman: Son of the Demon" (1987) was the first graphic novel to feature Batman.

Written by Mike W. Barr and illustrated by Jerry Bingham, the story builds on the relationships between Batman, Ra's al Ghul, and Talia. Batman and Ra's team up to fight a common enemy and Batman gets Talia pregnant (oops!).

Batman forms such a strong bond with the father/daughter combo that Ra's proclaims Batman as his "son." On this very page Ra's proclaims, "I HEREBY DESIGNATE THE BATMAN AS MY SECOND-IN-COMMAND... MY SON." Thus the "Son of the Demon" was born. Also, check out that Neal Adams inspired panel of Batman and Talia embracing as newlyweds. Perhaps the best page of the book for content.

Although the story builds on previous work by Dennis O'Neil and is heavily influenced by the art of Neal Adams, it was deemed to be non-canon and served as a stand-alone story in the '80s. After all, Batman and Talia never had a child together and Batman continued his life in the canon comics stories without being a father.

Flash forward to 2006 and writer Grant Morrison decided to make parts of this story canon and introduced Damian Wayne, Bruce and Talia's secret love child, who Talia raised and trained without Bruce knowing of his existence. When the story "Batman and Son" was released in 2006, "Batman: Son of the Demon" was also reprinted and restocked on the shelves to give current readers an understanding of how Damian came to be. 🐦‍⬛ ➕ 🐝 🟰 🍼

When I showed this page to Marcus at SDCC (where I got it), we joked that this page is the BIRTH page of the Son of the Demon. And.... it's also the preconception page of the son of the son of the demon. Ha! The racy dialog at the bottom of the page even references the conception process.

Anyway, in all seriousness, this is a beautiful page and I'm happy to add an amazing example from this historic story. on 15x20" board

A most excellent page from an 80s graphic novel classic! 1st appearances and birth pages were so yesterday. Pre-birth birth pages are where it's at now! congrats on the awesome Bingham art from an important influence on DC/Batman history!

Bingham art for this story is quite rare and this is a showcase training montage in the book!  It's hard to believe Batman was never trained in the ways of intimacy with his Bruce Wayne playboy persona.

A good training montage scene is a "must" for an '80s graphic novel in the tradition of the Rocky movies and other '80s classics such as The Karate Kid and (a year after this story) Bloodsport!

Also, playboy Bruce Wayne may have plenty of training and experience with the ladies, but this was Bruce's first experience as a "newlywed."

I guess he's not used to going in raw.

The first graphic novel I ever read. This was a big deal at the time. The GN was $15, that was a lot to kid and it was shrink wrapped so you couldn't browse through the book. You had to take a leap of faith. It did not disappoint. The painted cover grabs you. The art was beautiful and the story was epic (at least to me).

Congrats on finding a great page. A classic for sure.
