DescriptionLittle Mary Mixup was an American comic strip drawn by Robert Moore Brinkerhoff, which ran from January 2, 1918, to February 2, 1957. Distributed by United Features Syndicate, the strip ran mostly in minor local papers until it ended with Brinkerhoff's retirement. It debuted as a gag-a-day strip featuring a mischievous nine-year-old girl. Mary aged slowly, and by World War II, she was an adventurous teenager who could participate in the war's homefront activities. By then, Little Mary Mixup had developed from a gag strip into an adventure strip that involved kidnappers, crooks, and a treasure hunt. However, the Sunday strips were separated from the daily continuity and continued to feature simple gags. This strip caught my attention purely because of the last name of the creator, which is shared by my artist friend extraordinaire Spencer Brinkerhoff III. Social/Sharing |

Catch Binkerhoff, mom to take me down the line
My fat is sinkin' low and I do believe war time
To get fat to Miss Julie, you know she's the homely one
Who sent me here with her strip art for everyone
Take a load off Mary
Take a load for free
Take a load off Julie
Fat (fat, fat) you mix it all right for me
(You put the ol’ weight on me)

Poor Little Mary Mixup... even her mother thinks she looks terrible. With all those mommy issues and insecurities I'm thinking Little Mary Mixup likely turned to the Dark Side and became a very powerful Sith Lord. Even Spencer Brinkerhoff would approve of this storyline.

This particular daily is proof that fat shaming has likely been around since the beginning of time!

Or in this case, thin shaming!

A fun little daily! I really like that 3rd panel closeup with the fully inked background. And thanks for the history lesson on this strip, never knew about it until this post :)

I was aware that there were regional and local strips in addition to all of the nationally syndicate ones. However, I have been pleasantly surprised by how many survived in OA form, and the variety found within.
