DescriptionHere it is, at long last! The last piece of the Legion alphabet that I was able to add to my collection! There wasn't much to go on in the way of "Y" Legionnaires. Myself and a few others suggested Yera, here, and one very well-versed Legion fan remembered that Sodam Yat the Green Lantern appeared in a few Legion issues, but ultimately I'm very glad that Barry went with Yera, because I think it's one of the best pieces in the entire alphabet series! Barry decided to paint Yera in the gorgeous purple gown originally designed by Colleen Doran when she drew Yera's entry in "Who's Who in the Legion of Super-Heroes". Barry says that when he saw Doran's design for the dress, he immediately knew to how incorporate the "Y" into this piece: by giving Yera gloves and letting the collar and low cut of her dress create a "Y" of exposed skin! If that's not the cleverest method Barry found to incorporate the letter into an alphabet piece, than it's certainly the most natural and organic. If you didn't know this was supposed to be an alphabet piece, you'd probably never guess that there was a "Y" in there at all! I think this piece also takes a spot on the podium of my three favourite alphabet pieces. I wasn't necessarily planning on buying whatever Y piece Barry did, but one look at the finished product and I just couldn't help myself. When I was much younger I may or may not have had an interest in fashion design, and the way Barry painted Yera here is very reminiscent of a painted model wearing a newly-designed dress. My favourite part is how Barry was able to get the lace patterns on her dress astonishingly symmetrical on either side of the middle split, but I also really enjoy the heavy black shading on her collar and gloves, which gives them a satiny shine. His watercolours in this piece are especially smooth and gradually blended. I think the green background he added complements the figure very well - if you read her skin tone as a light orange, than you've got a colour palette made up entirely of the secondary colours (orange, purple, and green). And that brings us to the end of Barry's Legion alphabet, or at least the parts of it that wound up in my collection! A few other ones have made their way to CAF already, and I hope to see more in due time. This was the first time in my collecting career that I had the chance to collect parts of a "series" as it was being created, and it's one of my favourite experiences I've had in this hobby! A huge thank you goes out to Barry and his wife Caitlin for creating such beautiful art and making it available to us. Also, Barry mentioned a few times that he would be amenable to painting a second Legion alphabet somewhere down the line, so who knows? Maybe I'll be able to pick up all the letters I missed the second time around! Social/Sharing |

A nice piece with end the Kitson Legion Alphabet series pickups for you! I definately see the aspects of Colleen Doran's design that Barry worked in, that lace pattern is exquisite. congrats on all the great additions from this series and the excellent fan/customer experience along the way!

You are my Yera
Allon desire
Believe when I say
I want it Barry
But we are two worlds apart
Can't reach to your art
When you say
That I want it Barry
Sell me Y
Ain't nothing but antennae
Sell me Y
Ain't alphabet’s mistake
Sell me Y
I never wanna hear you say
Won’t sell it no way

Marcus, this is a fantastic and very clever song comment, but now every time I hear this song I'm always going to have the urge to sing "Sell me Y" instead of the proper lyrics. I hope you're proud of yourself! :P

I loooooove the dress!! Leave it to Barry to take an already gorgeous design and somehow make it even more beautiful!

Legion of Super-Heroes did the "I married a shapeshifter pretending to be my colleague" story a few years before the FF did the same thing to Johnny Storm.

Yeah, talk about a rug-pull for poor Colossal Boy! I am glad he and Yera wound up staying together; I thought that their relationship when she was pretending to be Shrinking Violet was very sweet, ultimately.

This collection of cards has an amazing back-story, as per the description you wrote for your Andromeda card. Each card is a beauty (maybe Shrinking Violet is my favorite, but Yera here leaves a strong impression). I feel lucky for having checked out your new art today

Oh, wow, thank you for saying so! And thank you for taking the time to look through and like all of my alphabet pickups! I personally have a hard time picking a favourite, but I agree that the Vi piece is very special, and a real standout.
