DescriptionI was incredibly fortunate some years ago to pick up a gorgeous Grell watercolour piece featuring headshots of three Legionnaires. I figured it might be the only Grell piece I'd ever add to my collection without having to commission one myself, but I always hoped to someday come across one of his gorgeous full-figure pencil pieces for sale, and at the Spring 2025 Comic Art Live convention, I did!!I am beyond thrilled to be able to add a Grell pencil pinup to my collection. Some days I'll just scroll through CAF and look at the huge catalogue of Grell pinups we've amassed as a community, so it's a pretty great feeling to finally get to add my own to the ranks. I will say, prior to this, I never expected that my hypothetical Grell pinup pickup would feature Light Lass! By far the most common Legionnaire to see Grell draw is Dawnstar (considering he created her, and all), but Phantom Girl and Princess Projectra are pretty common to see, too. I feel as though I wound up with a "rarer" character, which is pretty awesome! As for the piece itself, it's just a phenomenal example of what Grell can do with a pencil. Every last pencil stroke is deliberate; you can see it in how the shading lines on Ayla's costume and body are all done in particular directions to create specific contours. There's even some shading on her back (left) leg which is so light you hardly notice it at first glance, just to show the faint shadow that would realistically be cast from her legs overlapping. The blended pencil outline is perfect for adding a bit more content to the piece without having Ayla blend into the background. Also, as someone who is very much a stickler for comic-accurate costume designs in my commissions, I'm very happy (but not at all surprised) to see that Mike got all the details just right, right down to the little dark square where the white stripes on her uniform overlap. I really love the pose, too, which definitely gives the impression of Ayla using her antigravity powers, and her expression makes it seem as though she's concentrating on what she's doing, but also enjoying the experience of using her powers. It does seem like Grell will use this pose as a sort of template for his pinup pieces - you can find a few other pieces on CAF that use this pose, and I've seen a Princess Projectra piece kicking around that also uses it - but it feels very appropriate for Ayla given her powerset, so I don't mind at all. Brilliant pencils (linework and shading both!) by Grell. congrats on finding both a great Grell piece and a less common character for him Legion-wise to depict. getting a major collecting goal accomplished during a Comic Art Live always makes the online convention more fun as well, kudos!

I'd say get as many of these pieces as you can with classic Legion creators while they are still around and have the skillset to carry them out. A glorious pose for Light Lass basking in light from the way Grell shades in her figure.

Yeah, that's a very good point. I'm hoping to at least commission a Brainiac 5 from Grell at some point, but I'd love to build up a whole Legion of commissions from him over time!

Beautiful pencil work by Grell.
It's really something to get to examine Grell's pencils up close and in person!
