Comic Art Archive: American Flagg!
Issue: 9   Page: 16

Description

Howard Chaykin's unrestricted political wit, innovative page design - along with in-your-face lettering by Ken Bruzenak - redefined what comics looked, sounded, and read like when it debuted in 1983 (going from the latest issue of The New Teen Titans to American Flagg! #1 almost melted my teenage brain).

The first 12 issues won tons of awards and paved the way for the comics' breakthrough of the late-80s. In this page from #9, Plexus Ranger Reuben Flagg uses some persuasion to get information on a couple of bad guys . . . "BLAM!"

For those unfamiliar, Reuben Flagg was the star of a hit TV show in 2031, but got replaced by a computer-generated AI actor. Out of work, he joins the Plexus Rangers in Chicago . . . a kind of national police force.

Not possible.

Flagg is stationed in the Chicago Plex Mall, which is a fortress-like city within a city. Plex Malls are controlled by The Plex, a corporate/government hybrid. Flagg quickly realizes that Plex leaders are corrupt. Flagg also discovers how Plex-controlled media manipulates broadcasts and entertainment to control the narrative and distract citizens while consolidating power.

Not in America.

During this 12-issue arc, Flagg exposes corruption and false media narratives while navigating a complex world in which government and corporations have become intertwined.

Nonsense.

Excellent page from a seminal 80s series brought to the world by the great Howard Chaykin! He certainly was ahead of his time both artistically and as a writer tackling political satire and the future of society. And considering whats taking place in modern times he wasnt that far off. Great addition, congrats!

Love the last two panels with the gutter in between to show a silent beat before he completes his one liner.  I have plans to travel out of the country and the CAF app is certainly on the list of social media they'll check at customs for re-entry given Bill's criminal history.  So yes, this is nonsense.

Hell yes on this page.

Hell yes on Flagg.

Hell yes on that write up.

Damn, do I love that second panel.

An amazing page from an amazing issue. The art, lettering and incredibly accurate futurism get all the attention, but don't overlook how tightly scripted the first 12 issues of Flagg! are. The story has so many threads that come together in issue 12 - it is Chaykin's most mature work, done almost 45 years ago. I will put that 12 issue set up against almost any run for storytelling alone.

Thanks Doug. I had a chance to speak with Howard a bit about his work on Flagg! last year in Baltimore:
