Description

I bought this page directly from the inker, Rob Stull, via his CAF account. He uploaded it for sale in 2007, and it sat there until 2024 when I reached out to him about it. I was delighted to get a page focused solely on one of my favourite parts of the Threeboot Legion - the relationship between Brainiac 5 and Dream Girl - and it was nice to deal directly with an artist who had helped bring the Legion to life at one point. Sadly, Rob passed away earlier this year, so I'm very glad I had the chance to interact with him, and to give one of his pieces a good home.

Here's the context: after Dream Girl's tragic death, Brainiac 5 becomes fixated on bringing her back to life (because unresolved romantic tension will do that to a guy). Here we see Brainy finally putting his plan into action: the force field around Dream Girl's body has been preserving her "soul", or the information that comprised her being. He plans to use the comatose mind and information-based mental powers of Praetor Lemnos - whose machinations were responsible for Dream Girl's death in the first place - to concentrate her essence so it can be used to restore her. That essence would then be filtered through Brainy's brain (given that it's essentially an organic supercomputer that can direct information on such an enormous scale) and used to bring Dream Girl back from the dead.

Well, let me tell you, the only thing more insane than that plan is the fact that it actually works... in a sense. After this page and the culmination of Brainy's procedure, Dream Girl's body just... vanishes. And it isn't until later when Brainy falls asleep that he discovers that her "essence" has taken up residence within his own mind, instead of in her body. Her soul/spirit/essence stays with him until the very end of this run on the Legion (meaning he essentially shares her power of precognition through dreams), until he's finally able to restore her soul to her body in the final issue.

I do think this page would benefit from having its dialogue present on the OA itself. Brainy's fanaticism and near reverence for seeing his goal accomplished would do a lot to explain his very, um, intense expression in the final panel. I do enjoy all the fun 31st-century technology we see throughout the panels, and the various effects used to show Dream Girl's "soul" being filtered through Brainy's head and into her body. And it's great to finally own a published piece of art featuring Dream Girl herself, since she's one of my favourite characters from this run of the Legion.

A memorable story arc from a memorable Legion run. Supergirl's name came and went from the masthead as it progressed.

I always appreciated how they were able to make Supergirl part of the team without sacrificing storylines that focused on the other Legionnaires, like this one.

I some how missed Rob Stull's passing. So sorry that we lost another Ldgion creator.

Nice page.

Nice page.

Thanks, Miki.

It's sad to see how many we've already lost. It makes me grateful I've been able to connect with a few, but there's a lot more I want to meet while I still can.

It reads better without the dialogue.  Looking at a hot babe behind glass is making Brainy's brain explode!

Ohhhhh Marcus, what would I do without you?  That's a hilarious alternative interpretation, and it makes me feel better about Brainy's silly expression in the bottom panel.  We've all been there.

A nice page that found a great home with you! Sorry to hear of Rob's passing, glad you were able to interact with him and pick up some of his work. I like how there's a visual correlation between Brainy and the rebuilding of Dream Girl (even if only in his head in this case!).
