DescriptionBernie was a master of the comic form, not just a great illustrator. This prelim is for one of my favorite pages from the whole run, and it doesn't have any main cast on it and Bernie didn't even ink it (supposedly it was Jones, but I see Kaluta). What's great about these prelims is they aren't thumbnails--they're the same size as the final, and typically, as here, it's the sheet on which Bernie did the whole work of constructing the images and sequencing the story. It's an honor to hold this in my hands! There's an interesting technical effect here, in the presentation of two different durations. The character's movements and dialog are about a minute's worth, but the sky registers a much slower shift. We know this was chosen by Bernie, because he has the color codes for the sky here already in the prelim. Social/Sharing |

It was offbeat as a Swamp Thing story, but it's very on brand from a Wrightson perspective. It shows he still had a cartoonist mind and thought about page design when creating illustration.

It is always interesting to see what prelim lines an artist finds useful. The figure on the right is given more precision and character, while others have such sketchy poses - seemingly nothing like a Wrightson figure - and no indications of faces. Thanks for sharing this insightful piece.

Super cool to see this and awesome you landed it! One of the most interestingly designed pages in the Bernie Swampy run.

These are an excellent way to get nice vintage prime period Wrightson and not break the bank. It's weird the price disparity between the finished ink pages and these fairly tight pencils prelims.
