Description

I will never tire of Wally Wood artwork. He was a genius and although my personal memories are focused more on his Marvel (as opposed to his EC) work and although by then, his style was more "economical", the quality of his artwork (especially his brushwork) was amongst the very best.

I was quite disappointed when he left the Daredevil title after only seven issues. In that short span of time, he had revived and indeed revolutionized that particular title and his redesign of DD's costume in DD #7 has stood to this very day.

I was therefore very intrigued by this piece because I did follow his Tower Comics books as well. It is unique inasmuch as it combines both Daredevil and Dynamo in a unique fashion. Rumored to have been a pitch for a cover for a crossover series (which, if it was the case, never materialized), it was ultimately published as the cover of an issue of the fanzine, Rocket's Blast Comicollector #56 (itself a combination of two famous fanzines) - without the DD logo, probably for copyright reasons although it is obviously Daredevil, and is clearly the case in the original artwork itself.

Many have speculated as to the possible interpretation of the cover but I will not venture there as it seems to me rather fruitless to do so. However, what is clear is that this is indeed a unique piece of artwork owing to (as mentioned) the combination of characters.

Amazing story in your description. Cover is so amazing as well. The cover is a marvel in design, concept, and execution. I love its dynamism and perspective. Only a GREAT MASTER can do that.

Many thanks, Toni. It is so sad that he left us so early but true geniuses also have lots of problems as well.

Many thanks, Rick. As mentioned, it is just such a unique combination of two heroes Wood was famous for and who would not otherwise "meet".

Great catch! Knowing of Wood's personality and his attitudes towards his mainstream '60 comic book work as revealed in print in the Bhob Stewart book, I think the interpretation I've heard is valid as far as what Wood seems to be saying ruefully and cynically here.

Many thanks, Mark. Yes, unfortunately, Wood did tend to feel hard done by but he was such a genius that, had he been with us longer, who knows what new comics landscapes he might have transformed.

Many thanks, Ron. Wood was truly a genius. It is just so sad how it ended. But his work continues to stand the test of time. And I love the Wood artwork in your CAF Gallery and on that splendid show that you graced.

Incredible cover, with Daredevil claiming the throne as King of the Hill in dramatic fashion.

You can't go wrong with Wood!

Many thanks, Earl. I wonder what Wood was actually thinking when he completed this piece. BTW, congrats on a truly fantastic Green Lantern collection!

The lack of chest emblem on the published cover was most likely done because Wood hadn't bothered to ask Marvel for permission and didn't want to risk any drama with them.

While Wood's style was more economical when he went to work for Marvel, that was "economical" in the same way that Alex Toth, Mike Mignola and the more contemporary Chris Samnee developed an economy of line. What do those artists all share in common? Their "economy of line" approach is brilliant! Wonderful work.

Many thanks, Rubén. Yes, I agree and think that Wood had had enough of Stan and Marvel by that time.

And, yes, "economical" is a bit of a misnomer because there is real fullness and texture within the so-called "economy".

Many thanks, Corey. This piece has fascinated me for the longest time and only recently became available after its previous owner unfortunately passed away.

Amazing cover. I doubt that Marvel would have been interested in a crossover with Tower at the time.

Many thanks, Miki. I do agree as Wood didn't leave Marvel on the best of terms and perhaps that's one interpretation of this cover.

Wally Wood influenced so many artists in his day. His technical skill was always top notch and this piece shows that off. Just an amazing get. Huge Congrats!

Many thanks, Dan. Wood was such an amazing artist and although I've said it time and again, it is a cause for great regret that he left us so early.

There's no reason to tire of it especially when the art is always so good! The more Wally Wood the merrier :) - and this such a great one! Both characters look great in classic WW style and I dig the forced perspective from which we are seeing the scene play out from down below (plus I love a good falling from a ledge image!). The fact that it also has an interesting backstory and possible alternate publishing history aspect to it makes it even more interesting. I hope you get to flip through that fanzine issue at some point! Anyway I'll stop rambling onvery nice addition and congrats!

Many thanks, Kavi. And a great take on the piece, as always. I did purchase a copy of the fanzine but have yet to flip through it and will do so soon.

Many thanks, John. It was a financial stretch to obtain this piece but, as mentioned, the juxtaposition of the two characters was so unique that I felt that I should try for it.

Many thanks, Alberto. I think that there are still great Wally Wood Daredevil pages out there for good prices as the market appears to have levelled off somewhat. Hope to see one in your CAF gallery soon!

A crossover would have been unlikely back in those days, but the power of Wood's artwork made it so fascinating of a possibility.  Incredibly dramatic with the angle chosen showing Wood's mastery of action!

Many thanks, Marcus. It is possible that Wood may have at least wanted to pitch it in completing this piece although it was published somewhat later in this fanzine as it was clear that things did not work out. Whether Wood was trying to pitch it to attract Marvel or was just being sarcastic is, as I mentioned, not easy to tell.

Many thanks, Dino. This may well be the only time that Wood combined this two characters in one piece of artwork, at least in such a finished form and that drew me strongly to it.

Everything in this piece is perfect.  The perspective, the architecture and in particular the lighting and inking.  Truly spectacular cover.

Many thanks, Carlo. This is indeed classic Wood. It's just such a shame that it did not become a published mainstream cover but that would have entailed Marvel agreeing with Tower Comics to do a crossover.

Many thanks, Paul. As mentioned, it is a very unusual piece. And knowing Woody, there must have been some hidden meaning to this entire piece of artwork.
