DescriptionPublished August 14, 1944.Spitfire news photographer Brandy has already put on a parachute and in the next daily jumps out to snap closeup photos of the guerrillas. Fed up, Johnny wants to head back to base without her but on second thought lands the plane for a rescue. Meanwhile Brandy's parachute gets hung up in a tree and Nazi tanks stop beneath her. She drops flash bulbs on the tanks to alarm the crews, who button up and drive away. After some typical Howard Hawks banter Terry gets her out of the tree and they make a run for it, jumping into a ditch when the tanks open fire. Terry's planes destroy the tanks and his crew comes to the rescue only to find them making out in the ditch! This early daily is only two months into the strip while Johnny is still in the European theater. The strip itself started the day before the Normandy invasion. Its Milton Caniff-look isn't surprising in light of the influence and impact of Caniff's Terry and the Pirates. Johnny ends up in China after this mission, which ironically also is the setting for Caniff's strip. After the war Johnny Hazard shifts gears to Cold War espionage and Robbins' style becomes much more cartoony. A Cold War example from 1968 is in this gallery. Hazard's plane is a B-24 based in Italy. Many Army Air Corp pilots and crews including Presidential candidate and Senator George McGovern flew B-24s on bombing missions from bases in the country. The resistance receiving Hazard's supplies might be communist-led Yugoslav Partisans or royalist Chetnik forces. Historical note: In reality, the war in Yugoslavia wasn't just a war against fascism but also a multi-sided civil war, with Croats, Serbs, Slovenes, and others forming regional armies that collaborated with the Axis. Cooperation between the Partisans and mostly Serb Chetniks broke down and the Chetniks sided with the Axis to attack them. Although the western Allies supplied both groups, Chetnik collaboration with the Axis led to the end of that support and recognition of the Soviet-backed Partisans, which had become the largest resistance force in occupied Europe. The Chetniks tried to reestablish themselves as a credible force fighting the Axis later in the war but were defeated by Croat and other pro-Axis ethnic forces. (Wikipedia) In 1944 the Partisans and the royalist government in exile formed a coalition government. After the war Yugoslavia became a communist regime under Prime Minister Tito but pursued a course independent of the Soviet Union and Warsaw Pact. The Yugoslav government tried and found the Chetnik leader guilty of treason and war crimes and sentenced him to death in 1946. He was executed with several other Chetnik officers and officers of the puppet Serb government. Estimates of Yugoslav casualties during the war are 850,000 to 1.2 million. (Wikipedia) Tito's death and the fall of the regime and Iron Curtain several decades later released perennial ethnic tensions, sparking the Bosnia-Herzogovina conflict and atrocities. Great looking strip/daily by Robbins! That photographer is way too attractive for me to be able to concentrate on flying and/or landing any plane. I'd have crashed the plane forever ago! haha. Happy New Year, Peter!
