DescriptionI'm not really into pieces that aren't published, but I couldn't pass up this one. I love Bryan's work, and The Maker is one of my favorite characters in comics. This is the original design/drawing of Ultimate Mr. Fantastic/Reed Richards who would eventually become The Maker that we know and love today. This final revision was done about a half of a year before (Aug '03) the first Ultimate Fantastic Four series would release (in Feb '04.). Before I purchased this piece, I asked for a few more details around Ult Reed's creation. Here is the response I got: "Yes, I designed the Ultimate FF characters. Bill Jemas and Joe Quesada asked me to and I think it was because Ultimate’s was doing so well but also because there wasn’t an artist attached at that point so I did them and the first few covers (one of which, my favourite was never used because the story changed). The Revised note was likely an adjustment made in pencil until we all agreed and then I inked them. The Sue, Johnny and Ben ones were floating around somewhere too but I can’t recall if or when they sold but this was all twenty odd years back!" Social/Sharing |

Right in the time period of Hitch's first Ultimates run, it was a no brainer to have him work on the FF as the Ultimates was such a hit. A lot of these ideas would also be used when Hitch got the regular FF gig in 2008.

GREAT pickup. Wow! That time period feels like a golden age for modern Marvel and DC comics. The Ultimate U was tight, with only two writers and each book having a steady art team. I was pumped for the arrival of Ultimate FF, and the book didn't disappoint. Enjoy this piece of history!

Too, too cool, Mike! I think for Bryan, "FF" stands for "future forward", right? With the Ultimate U's recasting of all characters as far more young than their 616 counterparts, this reboot allowed for a complete rebuild of the central players, and who would be better to execute the main images and costumes for that assignment than Bryan Hitch? I love the practicality and real-world functionality that Bryan roots his futuristic designs in; it's those touches that allow readers to immediately and intuitively latch on and smoothly integrate into the story. The thick, insulated gloves here, as well as the reinforced, supportive boots... all capped off with that super stylized "4". Just so cool (and, like you mention, a fun piece of history with Ultimate Reed being the springboard for The Maker). :) Congrats, Mike! Great pick up!
