DescriptionIn my opinion, this is the most important of all the animation drawings of Grumpy from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. It is the final drawing of the scene that takes place immediately after Snow White kisses Grumpy, ostensibly against his own wishes, as he and the other dwarfs go off to work in the mine. In this short sequence of animation, the viewer can actually see the rough and hardened character of Grumpy melt away, until, as a result of one kiss, he softens and almost becomes as soft as Bashful. This was Disney character animation at its very best, and we can thank Bill Tytla for this memorable scene.Collecting Disney Animation Drawings, part 7 I have been told that even a close relative of Stu Reisbord who for a while around 1990 was dealing in animation art could only buy the standard assortments from him, just like other dealers. I bought a few drawings from the relative, and, fortunately, Stu made two exceptions for drawings that I specifically asked for. I had bought a rough animation drawing of the Robber Kitten shaking hands with Dirty Bill many years earlier. When the relative offered me a finished drawing from the same scene, I asked if they could get the drawing out of the scene which matched the number of my rough. When I saw that the dealer had a drawing from the scene which corresponded to the cel of the Robber Kitten that I use against a background from the short, I asked if the relative could obtain the drawing with the same number as the one which is on my cel. The relative, who I had never been told was related to Stu, managed by some miracles to come up what I had requested. Although Stu apparently never gained access to publicity drawings that were still in the studio but were not kept with the animation drawings in the morgue, the relative offered a nice drawing used in making a publicity still of Mickey and Donald from Mickey's Circus, I was very happy, since I thought that there might be a possibility of obtaining more publicity drawings. I asked if the dealer could get more, but I never heard anything further on that subject. Collecting Disney Animation Drawings, part 8 Not long before he passed away, and after years of selling huge numbers of Disney drawings, Stu sold what he had left to a wheeler-dealer type for a very considerable amount of money. Included in the deal were several scenes which had never been seen by American collectors, including a scene of Dumbo which, hands down, were the best images of the title character that I have ever seen. There were also complete scenes from early Mickey cartoons, the scene of Bacchus and Jackass which I previously descrbed, and some others. After a few years of selling drawings that he had obtained from Stu, only in groups, just as Stu had done, the best drawings were largely gone. The bulk of lesser drawings that remained were sold, again for substantial money, to a major auction company, which continues to sell them to this day. Contiunued... Social/Sharing |
