Description

This was published in the New Yorker on July 27, 1968. It is by Claude Smith, was known professionally as simply Claude. Claude was a New Yorker favorite and was published over 600 times in there. The New Yorker was and possibly still is the first choice market for free lance gag cartoonists, paying by far the most money and attracting the cream of the crop. This gag is typical of the kind of humor the New Yorker usually published. Claude was also a frequent contributor to Playboy, so much so that the Harvard Lampoon parody of the magazine satirized him. Playboy was the second best-paying magazine of the time. This cartoon undoubtedly would have been offered there if The New Yorker hadn't taken it.
