Description

This is Page 9 of Secret Hearts #145. Several things in it make me think it may be at least partially by Alex Toth. As near as I can tell, the sources that pass judgment on this don't weigh in on this particular story. Toth indisputably worked on Secret Hearts as close as #143. The experts I've shown it to think it's close or to close to call. One said he thought Toth may have penciled it and someone else inked it. Feel free to weigh in on this one.

Since I posted the above invitation, I got input both here and from the Comicart-L group. In contrast to those who saw the page in person at SDCC, everybody on line was firm that it wasn't Toth. As for those with an opinion as to who it was instead, I got the following opinions:

Estrada and Colletta,

Colletta inks,

Not Estrada,

Not Colletta,

John Rosenberger,

Not Rosenberger or Colletta,

Irv Novick,

Bill Draut,

Tom Lavier sent a link about that issue that had John Rosenberger as the penciller on one story it could possibly be, but I'm pretty sure it's the other story.

So, unless DC has it on record somewhere, we'll never know. I'm keeping the name I put on it but changing the artist to "Nobody Knows"

The only thing that looks remotely Toth-like to me here is the girl in the floral print blouse in the second panel -- and only in that panel.

well..some of the design elements & layouts..even the treatment of the details of the 1st panel is out of the "Toth" playbook, but definitely not Toth....nope not Toth....BTW..nice page.

not toth. the second last panel has a very strong toth feel to it but there isn't enough on this page to suggest toth ever touched it in layouts, pencils or inks. cool piece none the less, very nice flow.

What about the possibility of Wayne Howard as an inker for it does have a slight Wood-ish tone to it as he was around DC during that time.

Thanks for the comment. An artist of some note emailed me privately some time ago and said it was Draut and made it seem like a fact and not an opinion.
