DescriptionI will be the first to admit that "Hunger Dogs" is not considered the masterpiece of Jack Kirby, for the well known reasons that basically are all related to editorial interference from DC Comics. The publisher had the Fourth World saga to end abruptly, and differently from what Kirby had planned, forcing him to partly re-write and re-design the final story from his previous, original plot. This page I was lucky enough to collect is exactly one of those pages that were drawn in 1985 to extend the original version of the ending, to realize the "Hunger Dogs" GN. In a recent reprint of the Fourth World saga, these pages were even excluded, in an attempt to restore the original ending that Kirby had planned for Darkseid and Orion. I cannot stop thinking, anyway, about the fact that in 1985 this was the penultimate page that Kirby was drawing about the Fourth World saga, that it contains the last spoken lines of the story written by him - where Highfather talks about "a planet called hope...", and that while doing this page Kirby was probably aware that he was completing the last major project of his unique carreer. Moreover, I couldn't avoid to notice in some pictures coming from Kirby house in California (and shown on the Tri State Original Comic art site) that the cover painting of "Hunger Dogs" was one of the few pieces that Kirby was showing in his own living room. So, call me sentimental, but thinking about all these things sends much more than some chills down my spine when I look at this page. By the way, guess what: the page is beautiful. It's over-sized, there are Kirby-dots everywhere, and nine regular panels showing the floating city wandering through the deep interstellar space which, in a perfect Kirby fashion, is never just black, and never the same, but keep on changing, completely, in every shot, as if we were in a child's dream. Nobody did "cosmic" artwork like Kirby! And while I agree that The Hunger Dogs was not the ending Kirby wanted to the New Gods saga, my appreciation of it has increased over time. In a way, it is the perfect ending, because Orion refuses to descend to Darkseid's level. Instead of fighting his father, Orion chooses to live, to be his own man. Anyway, really nice page.
