DescriptionCouldn't pass this one up when I saw it. I used to mail order from New England Comics occasionally in the mid-80's, so I was on their mailing list for their newsletter. Even went to one of their stores once on a trip to my grandmother's, who was living about an hour south of Boston at the time. That was a big thrill for a 15 year old me. Well, one newsletter, a bizarre 1 page strip appeared called The Tick, by some local guy named Ben Edlund. It was rather funny, filed it away in my brain. Jump ahead nearly 2 years, when I was working in a comic book store (...surprise...), and I noticed a book on the order sheets entitled The Tick. Made sure one copy was 'ticked' off for me (sorry), and I remember laughing out loud at some of the things in the first issue ("wub, wub, wub", amongst many others). Made sure to keep getting all issues after that, which was no mean feat considering the extremely erratic publishing schedule. Upon discovering in 1994 there was going to be an animated TV series, made sure to set the VCR for that, and it lived up to, and maybe even surpassed, the comic, as Ben Edlund was heavily involved. The first episode even had many of the jokes from the first issue of the comic, so it was great to see them acted out 'live'. I've never managed to meet Ben at a show, and based on the dearth of Tick pages here on CAF, had the idea of ever getting a page firmly at the VERY back of my mind, figuring I'd never get one. Lo and behold, recently went to Will Gabri-el's site, checked out his recent acquisitions, and nearly broke the mouse on the computer moving so fast in an effort to get this great sketch. Based on the '90' in the signature, and the look of the figures, this is pure vintage Edlund, and while not a page, a full figure shot of The Tick (complete with a spoon!) is more than enough to keep me happy. Also, Running Guy, while not a character I particularly care about, is a nice representation of all of the abusrdist mock-superheroes introduced by Edlund over the years (personally, I would have gone with Die Fledermaus, although he only became as 'important' as he did due to the animated series, a good 4 years after this sketch). Thrilled to have this 11 x 14 piece, thanks Will!Social/Sharing |

Yeah, I went back and looked at this one a couple times, but then pulled the trigger on the piece in my gallery. I share your nostalgic joy of this character. Congrats.
