Description

Here’s an interesting one. This is the conceptual artwork (it's like a rough) for an unproduced Toy Biz X-men action figure store display. It was going to be released in 1991 at the beginning of the line. It is done entirely in markers and pen, and was used to show the higher ups at Toy Biz what the design for the display would look like. It measures about 8 inches high, by 18 inches long. The back has Velcro on it, from where it was attached to a presentation board for that meeting. There were no store displays ever issued for that line, so it's neat to see one was at least planned. What’s interesting is that the basic character layout and design comes from the classic Uncanny X-men #275 cover by Jim Lee. Interestingly, I also have the layout board for this display, and it appears to show that had the display been released, it would have used Jim Lee’s art. The art seen here is just a quick sketch most likely done by someone at Toy Biz, although it is unsigned.

Tommy, that is just phenomenal. I hope those that view this here realize both the uniqueness and rarity of this comic/toy piece. You have got to tell me how you tracked this one of a kind item down, please email me. And how large is the header itself? Damn, gotta get that Toy Biz proto site going some day . . .

Thanks! I added the dimensions to my description. I tracked it down by waking up this morning, and looking under the Christmas tree. ;- )

Tommy, that's a killer piece of toy history! Toy Biz didn't do a lot of displays but this one would have been awesome had they done it! I wonder if such art exists for that Surfer display i have!?

Ha...that's one very nifty mockup. I used to collect those Toy Biz X-Men (and Marvel) carded figures because their cardbacks had individual character art. The early 90s were the waning years for such toy packaging art in general. Good score. Now...who's that Atlantean pretending to be Magneto? :)
