DescriptionI was never drawn to the Fantastic Four growing up. And, with few exceptions, not much has changed over the years.Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa's 4 is one one of those exceptions. His story of the FF being knocked down financially and having to start over really appealed to me. Probably because I'm far more interested in characters than their superheroics. So, seeing the FF have to trudge through menial labor like we all do was something I connected with. My favorite issue of the run, and one of my favorite issues of all time, is (fittingly) issue #4, which sees Reed talk a jumper down off the ledge. What transpired was an honest heart to heart about fear and loneliness, followed by a simple but grand gesture of friendship and compassion that showed there's more than one way to be a hero. For my money, it's one of the most moving scenes I've ever read in a comic book. It's also a scene with virtually no action. As a result, it relies heavily on McNiven's ability to keep things visually interesting over the course of six pages of dialogue. And boy does he deliver. Rather than let the visuals become repetitive and boring, he's constantly changing camera angles or moving the camera from inside the office to outside the building. Or slowly zooming in like he does here as Martin begins to tell his story. I love that, rather than rushing right to it, they let the moment breath and give Martin the chance to get to this point on his own time. I hope to one day piece the whole issue back together, but I'm especially focused on completing this whole sequence. If you have or know of anyone who has any pages from this issue, especially pages 13, 14, 15 or 17, I would appreciate it if you would contact me. Social/Sharing |
