DescriptionMarvel Super-Heroes vol. 2 # 9 March 1992“Cupids Error” Pgs 40 & 42 Pencil & Inks on Marvel Bristol Board Pencils: Ron Wilson (Signed lower left) Inks: Herb Trimpe (Signed lower right) Letters: Janice Chiang Writer: Dwayne McDuffie When Cupid shows up at the Avengers’ West Coast mansion demanding to find his beloved Psyche, who he believes has been reincarnated as Mockingbird, the Avengers are about to have a rather long day. Cupid is searching for his love Psyche who he believes has been reincarnated as the former Avenger Mockingbird. It isn’t long before the three Avengers get impatient with their guest and a one-sided fight breaks out with Cupid easily defeating the three. The rest of the West Coast Avengers arrive to see their fallen comrades and instantly engage in battle with Cupid. Cupid grows tired of the Avengers’ resistance and shoots the Scarlet Witch, The Vision, Wonder Man, The Wasp and Hank Pym in their respective chests with magic arrows and seemingly “kills” them. At this point, in Olympus we discover that Cupid’s mother Aphrodite has planned this whole thing and looks forward to her son meeting Mockingbird, but not Psyche. Cupid arrives at Hawkeye and Mockingbird’s apartment and kisses Mockingbird to restore her memories of her past life. They do not come and a worried Cupid takes to the skies, kidnapping Mockingbird, in hopes of reminding her of her past life some other way. Hawkeye tries to follow on a Skycycle and offers Cupid to an archery duel at Avengers Mansion to deduce who gets the hand of the lady. Cupid agrees and Hawkeye reroutes to Avengers Mansion before contacting Hercules to get the low-down on Cupid and invite him to help fight him with the Avengers. Hawkeye arrives at the Avengers’ Mansion to find Iron Man nursing The U.S.Agent who has gone into shock over the deaths of his fallen fellow Avengers. U.S.Agent rambles about how he has failed “them” just like “before” as Iron Man tries to calm him and get him to pull himself together. Hawkeye inquires what is going on and Iron Man shows him the other Avengers all lying “dead” in the yard. Hawkeye shares with Iron Man and the U.S.Agent his plan to draw Cupid out with the promise of an Archery duel. Upon hearing this the Agent snaps out of his shock and leaps into action, promising to kill Cupid when he arrives. Hercules then arrives on the compound and upon seeing the slain Avengers walks over and removes the arrow from Scarlet Witch which brings her back to life. He does so with the other Avengers and they likewise all awaken. Wonder Man confronts the U.S.Agent asking where he was when all the other Avengers got shot with arrows (he was knocked out inside, whereas all the others were outside). U.S.Agent stutters to respond but Hawkeye swoops in to the Agent’s defense having witnessed the Agent’s breakdown upon his arrival. Cupid arrives with Mockingbird and U.S.Agent instantly engages him by throwing his shield at him. This causes him to drop Mockingbird but the Agent rushes to catch her, promising he won’t let them down “this time”. With Mockingbird no longer in harm’s way, the Avengers attack Cupid and with the help of Hercules they overpower him rather easily. Hercules and Cupid discuss what is happening and realise the whole thing is a play from Aphrodite to usurp the power of Zeus in Olympus. The Avengers and co. travel to Olympus to save Zeus but he is enthralled with Aphrodite’s magic and attacks the Avengers. After a battle with some of the guards, Aphrodite releases a magical mist that makes the team tired. The U.S.Agent saves Hawkeye from the full effect of the magical mist. The Agent’s play works out as Hawkeye regains consciousness soon after and finds his friends and partners tied up to unbreakable vines as Aphrodite and Zeus are engaged in a ritual that will give all of Zeus’ power to her. Hawkeye, using one of Cupid’s magic arrows, makes an “impossible shot” at Zeus – the magic arrow reawakening him from Aphrodite’s spell and Aphrodite’s plan fails. Soon after the Avengers leave, with Cupid’s apology and Hawkeye receives a souvenir of the journey in the form of one of Cupid’s magic arrows. Despite it’s obscurity, it does feature a substantial amount of development of John Walker’s character. The obvious being him having some ‘Nam-style flashbacks, to presumably the death of his parents, when his fellow Avengers seem to die. We get our first real inclination that Walker cares about his team and likewise, at the end of the story, the day is saved by the Agent’s quick thinking and decision to try and save Hawkeye.
