Description

Some of the most wonderful art ever was produced by Bob Oksner and Wally Wood in the charming Angel and the Ape comic book from the late 1960s. Here's a superb example from that title, featuring both the major characters plus a hot Chinese villainess (and note the pre-political correctness in her dialogue).

Although this page has been colored, it IS the original art of that page, being on the appropriate illustration board and bearing the blue Comics Code Authority stamp on the reverse. This at some point was part of the collection of stellar comic book artist Gray Morrow, who often would trade his original art for the originals of other professional artists, or otherwise obtain their work.

I'm not sure how Gray got this particular page. But after obtaining possession of this page, he trimmed away the margins on all four sides up to the panel borders, and also colored it. One guess of mine is that maybe Morrow wanted to mount this page and others for display in some fashion. (I used a white illustration board as background when scanning this page, due to the fact that it was trimmed up to all the panel borders.)

A great thing about this page is that it is colored very professionally. But a bad thing is that, with the added color, the art is no longer exactly how Oksner and Wood produced it in black and white. When this page was put up for auction it did not receive much bidding action, no doubt because collectors were questioning whether or not it was bona fide original art, as opposed to perhaps some type of colored guide or stat. Their loss was my gain, as it's still gorgeous and great.

This source of this page was a Pennsylvania storage locker, the contents of which were auctioned off after Mr. Morrow's untimely death. And the person who purchased that storage locker's contents then listed this page for auction, along with a Mike Sekowsky Wonder Woman page and an Alex Toth DC mystery book page, both also trimmed and colored by Morrow.

Wonderful story, and a wonderful, wonderful page from one of my favorite comic books of all time. Please, please contact me if you ever should find yourself desiring to sell it. Consider this a standing invitation until the end of time. :-)

I love Oksner pages. I would love a nice Angel and Ape page. This one is spectacular.

A marvellous collaboration by 2 great talents, especially when it comes to good girl art. Who cares if the art has been trimmed. Congrats, Joseph!

Beautiful art that I am so glad was saved from a storage locker death.

It needs to be seen and thank you for posting this gem!
