Description

This is a preliminary drawing by Al Williamson for the first issue of the Flash Gordon comic book series published by Gold Key in 1966. Williamson did the art for the Flash Gordon stories in issues 1, 4 and 5. The old pages are extremely hard to come by and cost thousands. This is the closest i'm ever going to come to owning one of his great Flash Gordon pages, but it's good enough for me. Ever since I saw Williamson artwork for the first time back in 1980 when he drew the Empire Strikes Back issues of Marvel's Star Wars title. His realism coupled with the fantasy backdrop of the story made it seem like it was almost real. Later I learned of his fascination with Alex Raymond and Flash Gordon and could see that he took on the style Raymond created back in the 1930s. I still love looking at it to this day.

Nice! From sketches to the finished product, Williamson's work is just so pleasing to look at.
