Bushmiller, Ernie
"I am not now, nor have I ever been a member of the secret Bushmiller Society", he said to Tailgunner Joe McCarthy. There is said to be a secret society, comprised of Nancy devotees, but I've never been able to discover the secret handshake. What I do know, however, is that I love Nancy, the comic strip created by the great Ernie Bushmiller. Nancy was the first comic strip that I remember understanding as a kid. The funny thing is, as I've read Nancy over the years, I think I understand it less. Roy Blount Jr. referred to it as being so dumb, it's sublime. There is that. But there's more. There's a depth to the dumbness that's really quite deceiving. I've often said that reading Nancy is like reading a stop sign. You know, there are just so many ways that you can do it before you understand "stop". But Bushmiller was the master of the sight gag; the gag that required a pause in time before the connnection is made. And boy, it's hard to miss the connection. But Nancy is like...well, it's sort of like...I mean if you look at it in a certain light, well, aw hell, I can't explain it.
I will say that my preference of characters leans towards Sluggo, that urchin from the other side of the tracks. Sluggo is a kid, yet he lives by himself. He has no visible means of support, but as one of the book titles collecting the strip states, he somehow survives. He's that kid who's forever from Brooklyn, with the "dis" and the "dat"; and yeah, he somehow does survive.
So there's a non-explanation for you. I can't explain Nancy away. You either love the strip or you hate the strip. Personally, I love the strip and something inside me is glad that I don't know why.
