Russell PATTERSON
Designer, decorator, cartoonist, illustrator. Born, Omaha, Nebraska. 1894. Early education, Toronto and Montreal, Can. McGill University and Monumente Nationale for architecture. First job cartoonist Montreal Standard, then to the French paper, La Patrie. Left to study at the Chicago Institute and Fine Arts Academy. First World War, Royal Canadian Air Force. Back to Chicago for commercial career. AFter two years to Europe for five years of study and painting. To Chicago for exhibits, magazine and commerical work and advanced art teaching Fine Arts Academy. Was greatly responsible for the flapper and collegiate eras. To New York to work for Heart and magazines. The success of the Patterson Girl lead to designing of makkikins, textiles, clothes, etc. and to the theatre and pictures: Ziegfeld Follies, George White Scandals and many other shows Fox and Paramount Studios. Designed interiors clubs restaurants theatres. Children's villages, trains, hotels. Won Academy of Design gold medal for best consistent design over twenty-five years. Cartoonists award for illustration and advertising. Diners' Club '60 Award. Former vice-president Society of Illustrators. Founder member National Cartoonist Society, former vice-president and president. Married Ruth Cleary, daughter Russelle. So what!?
