Disney Studio Drawings for Short Cartoon Posters *

While there might well be other drawings for posters of Disney shorts out there someplace, I knowthat the following definitely existed at some point over the past 40 or so years:' 1. The Klondike Kid (1932) -- I owned it for several years and sold it to the Disney Studio. It was pretty badly discolored, had a somewhat obtrusive arrow in pencil pointed at Mickey, and was not an example that was from the regular series produced by the publicity artists beginning a couple of years later. 2. The Flying Mouse -- which came from Russ Cochran in the mid-1990s. 3. Gulliver Mickey -- which I bought at auction. It was consigned by a well-known Disney artist. 4. Mickey's Steamroller -- I was offered this one by a Boston area comic art dealer, c. 1984. Stu Reisbord later had it, before it made its way around a few dealers. 5. Two Gun Mickey -- The drawing I owned had just the large figure of Mickey firing his guns into the air, i.e., no logo, title or other items usually found on final poster drawings. It may have only been a preliminary drawing. 6. Mickey's Man Friday -- I don't believe that the drawing by "Wooley" was a design actually used for a poster. The press sheet for the cartoon shows just a generic Mickey poster, so it is unlikely that a specific poster for the cartoon was ever produced. 7. Boat Builders --Russ Cochran had this one when I bought the Flying Mouse drawing, but, for some reaon, he wouldn't sell it to the dealer who acted on my behalf. In my opinion this was one of the least successful poster designs, and its condition was a little shaky. 8. Mickey's Parrot -- this came from the Collectors Book Store hoard. 9. Moose Hunters -- The first poster drawing I owned. It had heavy underdrawing [in blue pencil], as is often found with Hank Porter's work, and it was cut down to the outline of the art. I eventually sold it to a friend. 10. Donald's Better Self 11. Donald's Golf Game 12. Sea Scouts - I was the under bidder on this drawing when it finally appeared on the market. It was the sixth and last of the poster designs which were used in producing the Circle Galley lithographs in the 1980s. I already had the other five originals produced by the Disney publicity artists of the 1930s [Donald's Better Self, Donald's Golf Game, Gulliver Mickey, Society Dog Show, and Goofy and Wilbur], so I very much wanted to own this one as well. I bid far more than what I considered it to be worth -- much more than the prices I had paid for the others I own, and gave up bidding when the price reached a level that I could not justify paying. 13. Mickey's Trailer 14. Society Dog Show 15. The Farmyard Symphony 16. Polar Trappers 17. The Practical Pig 18. Goofy and Wilbur -- Hank Porter's family sold it on eBay, where I bought it. 19. The Ugly Duckling 20. The Fox Hunt -- an unused design. 21. Good Scouts -- also unused. I owned it for several years. It has orange underdrawing, which is very unusual. I do not believe that it was drawn by Wood, Gonzales, or Porter. If it is by any of them, it would be Manuel Gonzales. 22. ??? There is a drawing for a poster for Puppy Love which is fully colored with colored pencil and is smaller than the other known poster drawings. The drawing does not have a fold across it (as most poster drawings have), but the paper of the drawing is brittle. Since I have no idea if a poster was even actually produced for the cartoon or what it might look like, I can't determine if this drawing is a unused preliminary or a final design used for a Disney poster. Images of each poster not shown in this section are posted as Etra Images under the first thumbnail below.
