A PSA ON COMIC BOOK PRODUCTION ART & COUNTERFEITS: Hello CAF community, I recently purchased some counterfeit production art items on eBay, and was messaged by a member of our community who worked in comic publishing and let me know that the items I was posting were fake. I should have known better, absolutely, but life being what it is (these days particularly), mistakes happen. In any case, the nice man who contacted me shared some information, and I researched some more, and I would like to share what I found to help others in their collecting endeavors. The production art pieces I bought and posted have now been moved to my "Prints & Lithographs" gallery because that is what they are: photocopies on paper or acetate. Whether that is worth buying/collecting is for each individual to decide, but these are not worth much (if any) money and should not be considered a comic art investment. If you just want a pretty thing to hang on your wall, okay. I found a good discussion of this issue on the CGC boards which covers a lot of interesting points: https://boards.cgccomics.com/topic/330078-acetate-transparencies/#comments. I received a message back from leadpink (the seller of the acetate pieces), who claims these are used for overseas publication, hence the separated text. They mention this in the CGC boards and have some good suggestions for why this (although more plausible than any other explanation I've heard) is probably also not the case. If anyone here has direct foreign market publishing experience and knows for a fact how Marvel and DC conduct international publication, please send me a message with that information, as I'm curious. Someone on the CGC board contacted Marvel and "Irene Vartanoff [just] confirmed that Marvel never used acetates in the silver age," which makes a number of the ones these sellers post fake outright. There are matters of stat pages and types of production art other than 4-color separations, that these could be, but good explanations are provided for why not. Please read this thread if you have questions about production art and/or the printed items for sale on eBay, and as always CAVEAT EMPTOR! Thank you, Michael Browning, for the information you provided and making me aware of the problem in the first place.
