A red flag when buying vintage art online is the phrase "good condition for age". So it was with these pieces which are not really in good condition for any age, thanks partly to having been sandwiched in a frame behind glass and matting for many years. However, I've now removed them from the frame and stored each panel in a separate plastic sleeve, which should hopefully prevent further degradation. They are interesting panels used in the February 16 1901 edition of the long running British comics magazine 'Ally Slopers' Half Holiday'. The story features the characters 'Sam Slider' and 'Weary Violets', both seeking shelter from the law. I don't know if these were regular characters or one-offs for this strip. The completed published page is also shown (in quite poor quality unfortunately) beneath each panel, along with the back of each artboard. The back of the art boards have the artist as 'F. Watkins'. I am assuming this is Frank Watkins (1863 - 1929) who was a well known British illustrator, but I have no confirmation of this.
