Papp, George [Superboy, Advenure Comics, Green Arrow]
I bought my first page from Superboy No. 89 [page 8] for $70 from Mitch Itkowitz at the 1987 San Diego Comic Book Convention. The Mon-El origin story was, and still is, one of my favorites of all time, and I was amazed that I was able to acquire even a small part of the art for that historic issue. I didn't lay eyes on any other pages until Richard Halegua had a few of the less important ones on his table at San Diego in 1996. We were discussing them as I was buying one of the better ones, and Rich told me that he had some other, more important pages, but that they were much more expensive. I told him that I was interested, and a while later he brought them in. Included was the last page of the story, which shows Superboy projecting the dying Mon-El into the Phantom Zone. I bought all the originals that he had. Since I then had about a third of the entire issue, I thought that it might actually be possible to obtain the whole story. But I only was able to find and buy one additional page over the next several years. I was also told by another collector of D.C. Silver Age art that he had one of the splash pages, and I knew that he was unlikely to part with that page during my lifetime. To this date [March 2021], only one additional page of which I am aware has turned up, and I didn't have an opportunity to purchase it. Given the reality that it was extremely unlikely that I would ever be able to achieve my goal with respect to Superboy No. 89, I sold off the lesser pages to purchase other art, keeping only the three pages which mattered the most to me. These three pages are still among my favorite pieces of comic book art in my collection.
