"Happy Ending" is the Comics Code mandated version of "Temptress" and appeared as such in First Romance #45 ( Harvey, 1957 ). Thanks to the artistry of Hart Rieckhof you are now able to see the story, as it must have been drawn originally, next to the censored story. When I received the artwork from Heritage, half of the text corrections had slipped off the pages and were enclosed in a plastic bag, the rest were loosely attached and came off easily. The original title and splash had been radically changed. I have tried my best to reconstruct the original drawings throughout the story, but it was very difficult to recreate Manny Stallman´s expressionistic inks on the large figure in the splash. Although the panels are almost identical with approx 50% of the dialog unchanged, a careful read of the two stories is mindboggling. What sick mind decided to ruin this story in the name of the Comics Code? I doubt that Manny Stallman was involved, most likely a staff artist did the changes. PS : After I created my own version of the splash, Ben Samuels has been kind enough to supply the original printed version of "Temptress" from First Romance #28. Thanks, Ben.
