Gibbons broke into British Comics by working on horror and action titles in the 1970's. He was one of the main creators at 2000AD from the very outset, drawing Harlem Heroes from Prog 1 and then Dan Dare, a character close to his heart, Rogue Trooper and ABC Warriors.

After leaving 2000AD, he was the main artist on Doctor Who Weekly/Monthly. In the early 80's he was recruited to work for DC starting with a well remembered run on Green Lantern starting with back up stories and then graduating onto the main feature.

He is of course best known for his Eisner and Hugo award winning collaboration with Alan Moore, Watchmen; one of the best-selling graphic novels of all time. He is also the co-creator and artist with Frank Miller of the Martha Washington series published by Dark Horse which also won them an Eisner award.

In 2005 he wrote, designed and drew the original graphic novel The Originals harkening back to the Mods & Rockers of his youth.

Along the way he has illustrated or written most of the DC universe characters as well as writing or illustrating for pretty well all of the major comic companies.
