Storm, George
George Storm (1893-1976) is an incredibly underrated artist, one who is unfortunately long forgotten by most casual comic art fans. Oklahoma born and bred, Storm began cartooning before WWI, and in the mid 1920s, created one of the first adventure strips, Phil Hardy. After Phil Hardy, Storm created Bobby Thatcher, another adventure strip. By the 1930s, Bobby Thatcher was one of most popular strips in the country. Towards the end of the 1930s, Storm entered the burgeoning comic book business, working in all genres, from superheroes to funny book animals.
George Storm had an energetic drawing style; one with a quirky line full of vibrancy. His figures often ran to exaggeration, not unlike Lou Fine's later work.
The pieces in this gallery are all unpublished panel cartoons that Storm used to submit to magazines, in search of a new audience. He sometimes signed his wife's name to the work in an effort to spread the work out.
