Schwartz, Samm
Once again, I am a bit late to the dance. I had never heard the name Samm Schwartz before this year, but actually knew of his work from my early yoot. Schwartz was a longtime artist for Archie Comics, working on both the lead character and my fave, Jughead. In fact, it is Jughead for which Schwartz is most well known. I was reminded of Schwartz's work on Jughead this past March in one of Kevin Nowlan's blog entries. That got me searching a bit for a bit more info about the man. There is a good amount of biographical information on Schwartz online, from this Wikipedia entry, to a wonderful bio written by his daughter. Joanne also posted some great photos of her father in this gallery.
But what do I find myself enjoying most about Schwartz's work? Well, there are a few things. The easy and fluid figure movement is just terrific. Schwartz knew the subtle nuances of how to make a figure move, but more than that, he understood the attitude of a figure. It's all over the the story in this gallery. Then there are the humorous site gags stuck into the backgrounds of the stories. Check out the action with the guy on the stilt's in this story. Compositionally, Schwartz really played around with the figures in relation to the panels, sometimes busting them out of the panel lines to generate movement, or just to have some fun.
