DescriptionBack in the mid 1980's, just before Batman became terminally grim, and Jason Todd became an angsty street punk, there was a 7 issue run of Detective Comics, written by Mike W Barr, pencilled by Alan Davis and inked by Paul Neary, which encompasses everything I love about Batman. It was up to date, and at the same time respectfully retro (retro in the good way). It had adventure, darkness, humour and detective work in all the right proportions.This fantastic example is from #569, the first issue of that oh-so-short run, and has Batman, Robin, the Joker AND (in the cage that's wheeled past) Catwoman, as the Joker's henchman (Straight Line... see, even the gang-members had names in these stories) snares an impetuous Robin and then Batman in good old-fashioned "fiendish deathtraps" (tm) - giant, strangling Chinese finger puzzles! Where is the best place to begin to gush over this? The slightly cartoony, Dick Sprang feel to it? Batman calm in the face of danger, and worried more for Robin and Catwoman than himself? The Joker looking uncannily like Jack Skellington (Except six years before NBC came out)? Let's settle for the Jokers face in that last panel, with a monolithic Batman in the background. |
