DETECTIVE COMICS #27 BATMAN ART by BOB KANE Owner: Rob Hughes Comment posted on 10/5/2017
Nick Katradis said:
Rob, an incredibly significant art piece of the most popular and recognizable character in comics, drawn by his creator! Bob Kane's art is sometimes avoided because its authenticity comes into question quite often, but here is a breathtaking piece that was drawn in front of you, in your own house, by Bob Kane! Its provenance is so secure that this piece is basically priceless and it would qualify as a grail in anyone's collection! ![]() Yes, Nick. It is a VERY SPECIAL PIECE that reflects back upon a very special time in my young boyhood. Bob was very kind to me and this piece is my most favorite in my entire collection. Fond memories, indeed! |

Fred W said:
I like this piece a lot! Not sure if this helps, but that woman is holding the April 1947 issue of The American Home, so it is probably from either that issue or another issue that year. In October 1947, the cover price went from 15c to 25c, so I would say it's a pretty good bet it was used in an issue prior to October, which should narrow it down to one of six issues. ![]() Hey Fred, Did some research via your advise and discovered that it is an Personal Accident Insurance Advertisement from The American Home Magazine from July, 1947 issue. Thanks again for the information! |

Ray Cuthbert said:
No, the original printing was not necessarily coloured by Raymond himself. The magazine cover was nearly monochromatic - black, gray and green being the only colours used. The exact date of the magazine issue was April 1942. ![]() Yes, there is a picture of the published version on page 173 in the book, "Alex Raymond - His Life and Art" by Tom Roberts. Not the prettiest coloring job in my opinion. |

A lovely drawing by Alex Raymond! Your colourist used a quite different palette than did the artist when it first appeared! ![]() Hello Ray, Thanks for your comment. I did not realize that Raymond did a color version of the piece. I basically asked my colorist to paint in a softer, more feminine watercolor style, which I think the art calls for. I was very pleased by the final result. By the way, you have a great collection of Raymond art yourself. Very impressive! |
