What a stunning commission of the Elementals!! Gorgeous work by Bill Willingham and Joe DelBeato! The team has never looked better, not even at the height of their success. Such a beautiful group portrait of the four teammates as they display their powers while interrelating with one another. This is better than any of the covers of their books. It should have done as a poster for Comic Con or posted at loal comic book shops. Congratulations for your persistence in chasing this piece. I'm glad the long wait was finally rewarded and you were able to acquire your grail! ![]() Thank you Bill! I agree, it is one of the nicest Elementals pieces by Willingham and even more special that it was drawn around the time he was working on the book. It definitely is worthy to be a published piece in some form. It was a piece I thought about for many years, and I'm honored that the original owner entrusted me to add this to my collection after he owned it for so many years. |

Is that the pain from the blunt force trauma due to the knee to the head I'm feeling? Oh wait....Nope, it's justthe effect of the stroke I'm currently experiencing due to theshock of seeing this page in YOUR collection! ![]() It's easy to get labeled in this hobby by the majority of art we own of a singular artist or title. Sometimes finances allow us to only focus on a small portion of what we desire to collect as we grapple with the pieces that passed us by. I didn't mean to fly off the top ropes and drop kick you with this purchase that I pinned down. But I'm glad you were floored by the outcome. |

Regarding the consignor, these early Elemental pages came from the estate of Chrsitine Farrell, who died earlier this year. She was a former comic shop owner in Burlington, who was renowned for owning a complete collection of all DC comics. Lots of info about her on the Internet. https://www.vermontpublic.org/local-news/2024-10-31/vermonters-legendary-comic-collection-rakes-in-more-than-5-million-at-auction-christine-farrell-dc-comics ![]() Jason, that you for that information. Another collector messaged me with some of this info as well. This makes these pages even more cherished now knowing the provenance of such a prominent collection that they came from. |

Not sure if this has been talked about by Neal in any of his interviews, but it would be interesting to know his mindset before, during, or at the end of this legendary run. Did he feel that he was brought in to try and save the title, or was it more like he felt could do whatever the heck he wanted since the book was probably going to be cancelled anyway. There were certainly plenty of bold artistic choices throughout the run (he took over with #56 by the way, not #58). But the same could be said with any of his Avengers, Batman, Brave & Bold, Deadman, or GL/GA work. In any case, his work with Palmer on those nine issues was nothing short of magnificent (#64 was Heck and #66 was Buscema). From a collecting standpoint, one could argue that there really isn’t a bad page to be had. This particular example, with its exciting action sequence and innovative panel design, is an absolute gem. Congratulations sir! ![]() Hey Eric, Neal told me it was the latter. He knew going in that the book was going to be canceled, so he had pretty much had free reign to experiment with the book. He requested the worst selling title when he spoke to Stan so he could tinker with it. Their agreement was he could work on X-men first until it was canceled, then he'd work on a better selling book like the Avengers for Marvel after that. |

This is from Action Comics #1000. 2nd page of the story titled "Actionland"
"A tour guide welcomes a group of visitors to "Actionland", a Superman-themed park. The woman guides the crowd throughout Superman's life: his escape from Krypton, his childhood in Smallville, his adult life in Metropolis, his battles alongside the Justice League or by himself against his worst enemies until his final battle against Mister Mxyzptlk where the Man of Steel fell down. All of sudden, the world around the guide tour falls apart, and Mister Mxyzptlk appears, grumbling about his inability to come up with a suitably epic ending despite his reality-rewriting powers. His girlfriend -and tour guide- Miss Gsptlsnz states Mxyzptlk can't choose on an ending because, deep inside, he doesn't want the story to end. Superman defines him as much as he defines Superman. Mxy and Gsp hug as Bat-Mite and his partners-in-crime decide it's their turn now to ride Superman's rocket all the way to the Batcave."
