No, no, no, no....no Power Girl!!! None here!!! Stay away!!! If it was Power Girl in a JSA book, it would be in your gallery!?! Even if the page has a crowd of JSA'ers with Power Girl... Of course, DC prefers Legion over JSA, sigh, gripe, complain, grouse, remonstrate, lament, cry...Now fetch me Will Wheaton!

So many lines to guide the eye.  Very, very nice cover.

Yes! Excellent observation! Thank you, Mark! Kubert was a master of designing his art to make lines that guide the eye. In this case, the three sets of figures are the ends of a triangle. My eye sees the black roofs and Losers form an arrow pointing to the machine gun. The machine gun's horizontal line instantly draws my eye to the gunner and then just as quiclkly the two of them as a single image. Of course, the machine gunner also draws the eye to the Nazis lurking in the shadows.

I absolutely love the quality of the figure work on this cover, especially the machine gunner in the foreground. His pose feels incredibly dynamic and grounded, with excellent foreshortening. The folds of his uniform, and the reflective goggles are rendered beautifully, adding so much realism and texture.

The lighting and inking choices draw the eye directly to him, establishing him as the focal point despite the fact that our heroes are centered in the background. The Nazi soldiers backed up against the wall add a weight and sense of overwhelming dread and suspense to the scene. These are just some of the elements that made Kubert's art so strong for so many decades and why I love his work so much. Overall, to me at least, it’s a masterful example of dynamic storytelling through figure drawing. Congratulations on adding such a fine example to your collection, Peter!

George is such an experimentor and excells at any medium he picks up. He was the the person who introducted me to Battaglia's work when I was a student back in 2000 and we were corresponding via email. So now living in Europe I often see work that never makes it to the US. When that book came out on Battaglia a few years ago in conjunction with an art show of Battaglia's work it Italy I sent George some pics. It was completing the art circle so to speak, and I was thrilled to see him introduce that cotton ball effect into his work. This piece is a perfect exammple of that technique. Congrats on such a stunner.

Wow! Thank you for your excellent comment, Matt! Your insight as one of his former students now living in Europe helps me better appreciate the piece and the Battaglia angle. Like you, part of what draws me to George's work is his fearless innovation and excellence in using different techniques and media. Thanks again!

Really glad the brothers found their way back to each other, especially if it was based on a true story but either way it's a nice way to close out this complete story. Thanks for sharing it all, I enjoyed each page. Alsio issue 7 sounds like a banger - that monologue/narrator dialogue about war you mentioned is really poignant. Have you seen any art from it out there at all?

Thanks, Kavi. I'm glad you enjoyed the story! The brothers are fictional. I edited the description to clarify. I appreciate your comments about issue #7. Poignant - good word! That was the word I couldn't think of while writing the description. I took another look at #7 and only now notice that Sam edited sentences in word balloons by hand like he did in the Midway story, and that he does it more often. Funny how looking at an artist's original art brings out things you never noticed before in their comics. Have I seen any art from that issue? I saw a page in auction a number of years ago before I became absorbed in published art. A major war art collector has pages in his impressive CAF gallery.

Would a pilot actually have wasted time and fuel to go around and make another pass after the opponent had been shot down already, just to to try killing the pilot who is barely staying adrift? These are the types of details I wonder about, whether the comics publishers took liberties with the historical fact and perhaps embellished in order to create more drama. No differently than how the film industry takes creative liberties with "true stories" by adding fictional moments to make it more interesting. Either way, it's a really dramatic scene that allows you to feel the action going on!

Interesting question. Yes, that also drives me crazy. In the actual battle, the downed pilot feared he was going to be strafed so he hid under his seat cushion as he floated in the water. He didn't get strafed. It was, however, regular practice for Japanese planes to strafe pilots as they parachuted to the ground or were floating in the ocean. Here's an interesting fact: Ben Christman, co-creator of the Wesley Dodds Sandman, flew with the Flying Tigers in China and was killed by Japanese planes after he bailed out and was parachuting to the ground.

Great looking follow-up page. I love how Glanzman depicted the how the plane was breaking up in midair. But could the pilot really have survived the impact withthe water, much less with all his faculties intact and seemingly uninjured?

This is based on an actual event during the battle, albeit it was a pilot from the preceding torpedo plane attack. He was the only person from his squadron to survive
