Mail Pouch Great Wall of China in the google machine! This looks really cool to be a prelim of it as they introduced exotic lands like a travelogue series. ![]() Holy Cow! Great minds think alike. I never had the time to do a deep dive into research. I just know what I know, and that's in my description. BUT while you were making your great comment... I found one of these Standees on eBay! Awesome! |

Marcus Wai said:
All the elements are here and are directly transferred to the painting. Only difference would be the text placement. I do like that the word gold is over the bright yellow color in the painting. ![]() Yup! And I like that Rozen hand drew the logo on all these covers too! |

Rio Kid Cover Art Owner: Larry Wilson Comment posted on 7/17/2021
Marcus Wai said:
Very cool! The prelim looks so fragile. The color test looks so much brighter than the published example. Do you think they printed the same bright colors and the copy is just faded with age? Or did they have more muted colors in the final painting for publication? ![]() The pencil prelim is on the fragile side. It's on vellum. Back them these were not made to be preserved at all. No collecibility was forseen. It's remarkable that we still have the examples that we do. As for the colors on the painted piece. Yes they're much more dynamic on the test art. And while age related fading may play a part, I think it's predominently the more muted colors they chose for the publised cover. I think they went for more realism there. |

Like an archaeologist, your find should be treasured and preserved here for all to see. This artifact of the pulp era shows Rozen's thought and creative process of telling a story on the cover to entice readers. The hand on the knife was an element that I saw as adding confusion as well and good thing the published painting was changed. It would have sent us the wrong message about their thought process many decades later if they couldn't have seen that problem. ![]() You are correct! |
