There's supposed to be a big Taschen Stanton art book coming out in a while. That will be great to see.

I'm just remembering that I read this a while back and I'm pretty sure mine is one of the 28 pin-ups he did during 2006-2009 that Playboy bought only five of. And since a bunch of these came up for auction at once and came from the estate of Don Lewis, that these were possibly the ones Playboy did not purchase and Don still had in his collection...

That would be great if you found out where it was used! I figured it was Playboy as well but I don't have much in the way of reference material to this era of the magazine. It's definitely later than some of the earler pin-ups he'd done for them. He did do some earlier stuff that was used in the Playboy VIP magazines which I collect but they are too early for the art I have. Hours of fun looking through them!

Interior illustrations are the harder ones to identify for sure. I know a few collectors that have full runs of men's adventure magazines and occasionally show them an illustration from an unknown issue, but NONE of them have come through with the answer. If I had those magazines I would be looking through everything to locate it, it's my favorite pastime to research illustration art. And usually it can be homed in to certain titles and years based on the artist and style they were using at the time.

I do major research with Adam and Knight related adult magazines as well as Parliament magazine titles. i must have five hundred interiors for those and still trying to get a lot of the magazines.

I also subscribe to saturday evening post and about to subscribe to esquire because you have full access to all their back issues online. Such amazing stuff. Filled with wonderful illustrations. I wish cosmopolitan had an archive to access but they don't.

Just stuff from ebay. Mine are probably from the fifties but maybe earlier. I have found a couple "lots" of items people saved from their long ago visits and I grab them to look for any reference to the artwork.

I agree! I framed this one immediately. And when i did the research to find the magazine I saw lots of other pencil work illustrations he did during a certain period of time and they were all really nice. He was superb with just using pencils! I had another one as well that was nice but I ended up giving it to Heritage not that long ago and it made a profit for me to help pay for this one.

Fred had this listed for possibly two years and I really wanted it but just didn't take the plunge mainly because of finances due to covid hurting my work. One day I finally decided to grab it before someone else did. And Fred having it up there unsold for so long also helped with getting a better discount!

Considering that Blanchard was the Art Director at Ballantine during this period, I'm sure he took it on himself to try and mimic Powers style all on his own. I bought a bunch of art including a stack of cover proofs of the books he did the covers for and he was a third rate artist at best. He really wasn't very good and didn't have one style you could peg hin on. I think this is one of his best covers and he probably struggled to get it looking decent.

Having those cover proofs opened up a world of Blanchard work none of us collectors knew anything about in regards to him doing the covers. There's a series Ballantine put out and lots of those proofs were in his stack as well as two of the original covers so now i know who did them and what they are all about and need to do a little story about them for my friend's paperback fanzine one of these days. And my other favorite cover by him was at the bottom of the box and a quarter of it had eroded away from being in a shed upstate NY for so many years. So bummed. But I have some of it!

I think it must be early for him as well. it has an earlier style so maybe he was using airbrush more in his younger days.

I have books and a bunch of period magazines that had articles about Forbidden City and the other S.F. chinese clubs. I even have napkins and a menu from the club. There's even a documentary and clips on youtube. I've done a lot of research but not found any usage of this artwork. Maybe one day...

I'm the same way with those historical themed covers based in that era. I collected all the vintage paperbacks though because I was a completist. But this one always stood out to me as a beautiful Dell cover through all the years of collecting and when I would look at the cover I would say to myself that I'd love to own the original art. So many years later when I found the art I couldn't believe it.

And the Kunstler men's adventure cover I have up has the period clothing as well and when I bought it I figured I would flip it, but when I got it in my hands I couldn't believe how well it was painted and how vivid it was in person. When I brought it to the frame shop the guy there told me it looked like a museum piece. He loved it as well. So that went up on my wall and I just deal with their clothes!

So many people misidentify it as a Powers because a lot of the paperbacks were cropped at the bottom and the signature is missing. But some you can see it.

It's actually pretty early in his book career, he started only a couple years before this so i bet his style came out of his fine art he was probably doing then as well. He certainly did quite a bit of that through his lifetime and many of them could have been covers if he just stuck in a ship or an alien face.

No, a friend John Davis owned it and i got it from him recently. He had it up with all the rest of his great ones!

I've also always loved this one as well. I like seeing his non sci-fi work since they are not as common.

I've wanted to list this forever but since it had a nice frame on it i left in in there so was never able to scan it properly. Then talking with Victor recently he asked about it and it reminded me that it was listed on Heritage way back when I bid on it and that i could just use their photo of it. Problem solved!

It's definitely my favorite horror cover by Powers.

I forgot if John Davis told me if he knew who cut this, but Powers was notorious for chopping up his art and sometimes reusing parts of it. I've seen others where the extremities were trimmed off in order to make it a more frameable artwork. A bit of a bummer...

Hey Lee, glad you like it and it inspired you to get the book! I bought the book back in the day and I used to carry it around with me in junior high school and I cared more about the cover than the contents so it was great to get the artwork so many years later. Not that the contents were bad, I just obsessed over a lot of paperback covers growing up and have since been kucky to able to find a bunch of the original paintings.

This was always one of my favorite earlier Pocket Book covers and I think the way it was cropped for the cover is better than the full piece.

ps - I still owe you an email response on the Monte Rogers art we were talking about last summer. Some other examples are sitting on my destop waiting to send you and respond to you and it didn't happen in a timely manner so now i'm playing catch up with everything. But i will get back to you, I promise...

Thanks George. You'll have to wait until I die and then my wife will be getting rid of everything. It's always been my favorite early Dell cover and to finally own it was amazing.

I've had this for years and never scanned it myself hence the smaller image. It's been framed so I can't scan it unless i tear it apart. I always knew it was by Stanley but not until I got the other two was it obvious he did them all.

This one is definitely Stanley and i have this hanging next to Intimate Physician and they are the same size, the art is painted right to the edge of the board, and same color palette and feel. And her face is so Stanley to me. He did a bunch for Beacon right in this timeframe.

I know it's him and almost left the attributed off but since none of these three Beacons are signed i just kept it that way. Although he didn't sign many things.

Nothing was spilled on it, just the way canvas and canvas board comes out when you scan it. I was still looking for my other image when I posted it and just found it and changed it. I love his work for these covers and he captured the women's startled look in their eyes like no one else i've seen. She is so beautiful to me.

That's the only Meese I own. I'd love to get more! I really like your black-eye one, so well done.
