Thanks, I love it as well! The female model became a Penthouse Magazine Pet and her name slips me at the moment. Roger had told me years back. I think he painted her even more beautiful than her magazine shoots.

So many great Kastel paintings.  Share the back story.

I had bought two from different auctions and the others all came from Roger years back. I decided to post them because his son just did a story on his dad in the new issue of Illustration magazine.

Very cool set of covers, Brian. Did you buy Kastel out or something?

One night when he was sound asleep I snuck into his studio and loaded up my car...

Actually, I had bought the 50 Horror Stories a long time ago, and then I, The Hangman was in Heritage several years back and then I bought it more recently from the person who won it there. Everything else comes directly from Roger. I used to be in touch with him for a few year period before he moved from his studio and home and I've lost touch since then, sadly. I've been to his old place a couple times and over that period I bought any of his earlier work that he had offered to me. He's one of the greats and not as well known as some od the other guys so glad his son did the big story on him in the new Illustration Magazine issue which prompted me to post all the ones I own.

Always fun to see original Horror cover art, especially this early, as the genre didn't explode in the paperback business until the 1980's. Looks good on the wall, too, Brian!

I bought this paperback when it came out and carried it around with me in 7th grade. Although I did read a bunch of it, it was the cover that I loved and why i carried it around! I did that with a bunch of paperbacks back then and have since been able to find the original art for many of those books. Those hold a real special place in my collection...

They do have some similarities. He's a bit more detailed than Abbett I think. Both are top illustrators though. Some of the best!

This is hilarious. You know, I've often wondered in cases like this one, what the hell was the editor or art director thinking when they selected this artist to hand in a cover for a Horror magazine. I understand they were on a small budget and hiring someone willing to work cheaply was paramount, but it's like they didn't even try. There were countless artists looking for work back then, plenty of them willing to work for cheap or even for free just to get their foot in the door. Are we supposed to believe there wasn't ANYONE they could get in touch with who could actually draw horror characters in a scary style? I mean, this guy was clearly only suited for Hanna Barbera type monsters!

He's actually one of my favorite artists! I love his paperback covers as well. He worked for many, many years on bondage publications, magazine covers, LP record labels, and paperbacks (tons of adult publications) and one of the few african americans to work in this field. He painted more of these Eerie publications covers than any of their other artists. These comic mags were the most influential horror comics for my childhood way more than Eerie and Creepy! And, they are super rare. All but twenty or so were destroyed by the publisher's wife and a friend of mine owns over half of them, so not many out there. I will be listing a bunch of his paperback covers eventually.

Well you certainly are on an Abbett kick this week, aren't you? But it's a good thing! Anytime I can see multiple originals from the best illustrators in quick succession, I'm all in! This is a very disturbing image. When you actually stop and take the time to put yourself in the woman's place and think what it must feel like to be in that position, desperately trying to find a way out, all the while knowing your last few seconds of life are ticking away and that it will end in agonizing panic and torture, it's really quite sobering.

Wow, where have you been hiding this one, Brian? What a beauty!

At least fifteen years ago I was asked to ID the art by a dealer friend via a bad b&w fax image and I couldn't tell what it was so I didn't bother to make the purchase. Shortly after, I realized what it was and was bummed because it had already sold to someone else who was shown the art in the flesh. You would have to be a fool to turn it down. Fifteen years later, I get asked to ID the same art again from a different dealer friend! But this time with a proper image of it. Of course I knew exactly what it was and pounced on it. And of course, for more money this time around. I wanted it so badly all those years that it was a no brainer. But what puzzles me is that the original buyer who had it for so long never knew what book it was from. It came directly out of Basil's studio back when he was letting some stuff go at more reasonable prices.

Did you see the Jungle Jim #6 on ebay a couple of weeks ago? They stated it was a Prezio and I asked the seller how he knew this(I could see no signature) and he stated it had other work that Prezio had done written on the back of it(?). That answer did not thrill me. Have you got SFR 16 from PIF yet? That was the most exasperating experience with shipping, etc. My SFR 11 finally shipped out and I hope! to get Tuesday. Funny how your perspectives change on artists over the years, isn't it? It's like someone coming up to you and saying which would you rather have 200 prezio originals or one Frazetta. Sincerely, Ashley Batchelor

I just got me FedEx tracking info today on the SFR 16. It was so frustrating using the Art Pack guys. Very nice people, but not really on top of things. I never even got an invoice for how much they were charging me. They didn't respond to my first emails although they did receive them, so I was left hanging for a while. I've waited a long time to get the package finally shipped. I won a non-art piece from a Profiles auction three weeks before the SFR one, and that never got shipped by the Art Pack guys, so i just told them to ship both items together at this point. Anyway, i hope yours arrives when it's supposed to and in perfect condition!
