Did you see the Jungle Jim #6 on ebay a couple of weeks ago? They stated it was a Prezio and I asked the seller how he knew this(I could see no signature) and he stated it had other work that Prezio had done written on the back of it(?). That answer did not thrill me. Have you got SFR 16 from PIF yet? That was the most exasperating experience with shipping, etc. My SFR 11 finally shipped out and I hope! to get Tuesday. Funny how your perspectives change on artists over the years, isn't it? It's like someone coming up to you and saying which would you rather have 200 prezio originals or one Frazetta. Sincerely, Ashley Batchelor

That's an old friend of mine who was selling the Jungle Jim artwork. I went and looked at it and it had a bunch of info on the back saying it was Prezio. I should have taken a picture because i can't remember it now. It easily could have been done by him. It had his look to it. It actually sold on Ebay while I was there! It wasn't something I wanted anyway. I went to see a bunch of other pieces he had and pretty much bought all of that stuff except for a couple of things. I've known him since the eighties and knew about the paperback covers he owned and hoped one day i could get some of them. Lots of time went by, but I did get what I wanted!

Brian, what can I say. Couldn't have gone to a nicer guy! I agree; on Heritage could have easily hit $10,000. It is such a wonderful piece of art. Why in the world did the seller go to PIH? Glad they did, ha.ha. Love your Vic Prezio's by the way. His Warren covers are so wonderful. Don't tell anybody but I like them as much as Frazettas covers. Frazettas are very emotional paintings but kind of sloppy. Prezio's have that men adventure magazine style showing a lot of time went into the art he did. While it is nice Frazetta could knock out a piece in one night, it is hard to beat a Prezio, Kunstler or Minney that took some time to do. So congratulations to you as well. Ashley

I agree 100%. And I also prefer Vic's work over Gogos. Not that I don't like Gogos or Frazetta, just have more of a childhood attachment to Prezio's work. His monster portraits on Famous Monsters are way more iconic to me than Gogos. Vic painted more detailed monsters which i loved and still love!

Hey Ashley! Nice score! I held off bidding on this one so I could get #16!! It's one of my two favorite covers for me of the Space Family Robinson series. I actually thought it would go for more. Maybe if it were in a Heritage auction it might have. brian

So giant I couldn't find it. Haha. I looked but didn't see it. I don't do Facebook but went on through my wife's so I must have missed something. But i did see that Jack Harris died. Bummer. Equinox is in my top five favorite films of all time, and 4d Man is in my top 20!

Lovely to see this displayed. Did Ditko do the lettering, too? It looks so much like his hand-lettered later stuff.

Not sure about the lettering. A friend of mine just wrote a book on Stanton so i will ask him what he thinks!

Thanks Glynn. Back in 1973 when i was 12 years old, my dad took me to see the movie and after it was over i stood in front of the movie poster in the lobby and looked so intensely at it and was amazed at how cool it was compared to how crappy the movie was. And then to actually own the original art almost forty years later! I could have never imagined.

Cool, this is a classic Lesser! I've always enjoyed this one, though I personally would chalk up Lesser's anecdote about it to faulty memory. His sophisticated 'McGinnis' style as this one exhibits, developed between 1960 and 1962. As you can see with my Western he did in 1958, although it's nice and well done, it doesn't exhibit any of the interchangeable McGinnis/Lesser characteristics, and that makes sense given that it was likely his first cover. But I would be more likely to believe that Lesser's memory is a slightly mistaken version of reality. Meaning that this might have been the first one that he did in the McGinnis style to try to show publishers and be able to say "Hey, if that's what you guys want, I can do that too!". Either way, we'll never know for sure and it's a really neat piece to have.

i agree and wondered how much he actually remembered as the truth. but i think saying that it was one of the first he did in the mcginnis style to get into the competition, is probably closer to the truth. i do know which mcginnis cover he "borrowed" this from and it's pretty much a rip-off.

Oh, I LOVE Pleasure Island! So much in fact that it now hangs on my wall! I would've preferred if he'd kept her eyes open, but aside from that and the fact that the face is darker due to the shadow from the hat she's wearing, I have no issues with her face. You're right about Lesser's memory not quite being sharp anymore. I did already show him the art several years ago and his immediate reaction was that Mel Crair had done it. When I told him it had his name and complete address on the back, all he said was "That IS where I was living in 1958, so I guess it IS mine! Hard to remember everything I did after all these years."

i thought maybe you had Pleasure Island. Fred sold it for me. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder!

Oh wow, that was fairly recently then. Was this one of the ones you got directly from him? You've made me curious, do you recall the book title of the one you sold? Cool anecdote about Charles, thanks for sharing it. I look forward to seeing you post one of his earliest pieces. If you check out my Western gallery, you'll see that I own what I believe is his very 1st paperback cover!

these came from someone who owned them. know nothing about the seller. i saw pics on a phone and already knew My Body and always loved that cover, but the other one titled Pleasure Island i wasn't familiar with. when i received them i didn't like Pleasure Island at all. could see where he had trouble getting the face right. you should ask him if he thinks your art is from his first published book. he does have fading memory so not sure if he could even answer that question anymore.

Brian, as a huge fan and collector of the work of the esteemed Ron Lesser myself, I'd like to offer you my congratulations on owning this piece. Might this be another one of your earliest purchases going back to the early 90's?

i got this and another one six years ago and have since sold off the other one because in person i thought it wasn't that great. i love ron's work but it's very touch and go. i used to talk to him all the time because we live fairly close to each other. i was always going to pay him a visit and interview him but it never happened. i'm the one who hooked him up with charles of hard case crime to get him involved with painting some covers. i've known charles since he was a wee boy coming into forbidden planet in manhattan when i was a manager back in the mid to late eighties. ron used to offer me those hard case covers for $300 each once he got them back but i didn't want to pay him so little for them. i thought he deserved much more for them. i did buy one of his first pieces directly from him which i was going to list today.

Thanks, yes, definitely one of his best horror pieces (that he did so well)! Most folks think SF when they think of Powers, but he excelled at the macabre! I failed to see this one when it went to auction many years ago, but it resurfaced from the depths and crept into my collection this week :)

it could be my favorite. i like his horror covers a lot more than his sci-fi. and this was my favorite era for him before he started to get less detailed and simplified. good for you!

Magnificient poster art! I love this movie. Just got the lobby cards set. Art is beautiful. Only wish Turner had colorized it. You ought to see The Day the Earth Stood Still in color! Blows you away. This one would have been just as good. As would The Deadly Mantis, by the way.

hi ashley, thanks for the comment. i love reynold brown movie poster art. he was a master at it. i don't know as if i would like to see the day the earth stood still in color! i prefer black and white with these films. it creates such a great mood for me seeing them this way. was never a big fan of the colorization of films. i had been noticing you had a bunch of warren magazine cover art being posted. really cool stuff. have you had them for a while or are they more recent acquisitions? i'm always looking out for certain famous monsters and eerie & creepy covers that appeal to me. so influential to my childhood and who i am today.

Wow, 25 years ago? Amazing. Do you remember if it via auction or direct sale? I'm a bit surprised to hear that it may still be your favorite though, simply because it looks like you ultimately veered in more of a Science Fiction and Horror direction after buying it. Good to hear, though!

it was a direct sale from illustration house just before i started working there. during a time when very few people wanted this stuff. i was big into it since early eighties but grew up on science fiction and horror so still love that stuff. i mainly list that type of thing here because it seems to fit in a little more so with the viewers plus i convinced dan zimmer to put it on his radar issue cover so possibly more people now know this image. i collect erotic art and sleaze more than anything. the competition is too steep for me on so much of the sci-fi stuff! i started collecting paperback art strictly at first but then branched off years later. you actually own an old piece of mine i got in a larger purchase of art from one publisher that a friend of mine originally owned.
