Description

One of the most astonishing things Kirby did in his tragically aborted 4th World tetralogy was to introduce a despised underclass into the utopian society of New Genesis. The idea of the "good" New Gods, all the way up to Highfather, obliviously treating a whole population of intelligent beings actually worse than Darkseid was treating the proletarian Hunger Dogs of Apokolyps...? This is difficult literature by the standards of '70s superhero comics. The Bugs of New Genesis are also related to the Alpha Primitives of Attilan, the slave class of the monarchical Inhuman society ruled by the "heroic" Black Bolt. The horrific earth invasion promised in this splash is unfortunately defused fairly peremptorily in this issue, but the idea is explored at greater length in the Insectons arc of Captain Victory 1-6. The narrative of the BUG, cut short by the cancellation of New Gods, is recast as the REJECT storyline in Eternals. Kirby has specific, strong themes that he returns to throughout his career, as all great writers do.
