Standing in -very- sharp contrast to the organic feel of his sumptuous, inkwash-laden swamp pages (full of layered lushness and depth), this piece is a cold and terrifying (almost abstract) rendition of the industrial Parliament of Gears. Although it�s all traditionally rendered (!!), it really feels more like collage or clip art, used as an intentionally harsh and disjointed backdrop (all sharp edges and jagged teeth, rusty cogs, and grinding chains) to evoke an intense reaction in readers (and the Chaplin fan in me can't help but see signs of 'Modern Times'... :) ).

Does anything feel more alien or uncomfortable in the context of green growing things than industrial decay? Can Levi hope to overcome the Pale Pilgrim, the new avatar of industrialization, as he crushes everything underfoot and makes very convincing moves to render The Green irrelevant?

Horror can be as �simply� defined as introducing something alien into familiar surroundings and watching the dust fly (or congeal into sentience, as happened in this run). This recent Swamp Thing was a brilliant modern horror-fairy tale, taking multiple modern fears (identity, destiny, climate, industrialization, greed, and family) and combining them into a heady cocktail of, ultimately, love, redemption, choice, and responsibility.
