Original art for the US poster for the movie The Disappearance (1977).

Directed by Stuart Cooper (Overlord, Little Malcolm), and produced by David Hemmings (Blow Up), the neo-noir thriller The Disappearance is not so much a cult movie, as a movie that no-one-has-seen. Despite its star casting (Donald Sutherland, John Hurt, David Hemmings, David Warner, Christopher Plummer), its non-linear structure and, subsequently savage re-editing ensured that it bombed at the box-office, and is now barely available even on limited blu-ray.

But, this artwork for the US poster is the bomb! I've been looking for a nice piece by Philip Castle for a while, so leaped at this at auction. Castle is the key British illustrator of the 1970s and 80s, working with Stanly Kubrick (A Clockwork Orange, Full Metal Jacket), David Bowie (Aladdin Sane), Paul McCartney & Wings and his airbrush fashion and glamour spreads in Vogue and men's magazines. The British Bob Peak, if you like; so much so, that Pulp brought him out of retirement for the cover of 1994's His'n'Hers. And this is peak Castle...
